**chuckle** Stick around. We'll make a guru out of you... I used to teach computers while in the military.. Just remember you can't hurt 'em.. (Well, you can.. Just don't toss the bloody thing out the window when you get frustrated!)

I feel like a pest here on the board...
    1. If I get my cdl schooling funded or paid for, honestly i'm still struggling with who to try for a training company... I have researched and read read read ect..... and it is a difficult decision that i am finding.
    2. like i said i'm female and that is so/so a thought i struggle with there are so many perswasive(sp) people out here that trys anything. i'm not ugly but i don't think i'm pretty either just an average joe tring to make it in our crewl world. my family first, they need mom to be safe. i know that is no different out there as it is to live at home killings kidnapping ect... is everywhere that i know and that i can live with. drivers don't scare me or anyone just make you be more catious and aware of your surroundings! other wise don't ever leave the house.
piont is i don't want to be screwed by a company that is female(not freindly) then again i understand what everyone saying on here is depends on each person. there is soooooooo much great advice here and knowledge.
    3. what about crete??? anyone?
    4. like i said WHEN i get on my to feet and get the exsperince and otr in i will go to Van lines i have that all worked out already the connection have been made , BUT i have to get the stuff done first.
people laugh but i enjoyed it.

    thank you rosewhisper.

    Lessee...
WIA - Workforce Investment Act. Federal program to help offset the cost of retraining to a new career. Talk to your local unemployment office about it. There are a few hoops to jump through - but if you qualify, it's great.

Core Poster: Term for individual who regularly posts to a forum over an extended period of time. Also, typically referred to by others as, if not expert, at least knowledgeable and honest about the subject matter (I choose to point to LogsRus, here, as a good example)

I was down I44 last week, and didn't see squat. 'Course, me being asleep may have had something to do with that..

I wish I could help with the choice of training company. But, as we are all starting to become more aware - what fits me might not fit you. Where you are, I might give Maverick a call. Don't remember if they do newbies or not - but I did apply to them (not hiring in my area - not surprised at all).

To be honest, I've never heard of a company with a bias against the ladies. Not any company of any significant size and success. Don't even know of any with a bias against gays, who many see is much more threatening.

You know I lack significant experience on the road. But I will say that you have the right idea there - keep your eyes open and do your best to stay out of questionable situations (such as that Citgo truck stop down in Atlanta that's being mentioned on another thread. NOT a good place to stop). So far, I've not been sent anywhere I'd be nervous about - but I'm 1) male 2) 6'6" 3) not afraid to hurt somebody if the need arises 4) know HOW to hurt somebody if the need arises.

None of the truck stops or rest areas I've been too showed any indication they'd cause unease in anybody. Well lit, as open as a truck stop can[/] be.. I know there are those that don't fall into this category - but I saw only the one of them.

One thing - and I really recommend this to *ALL* ladies: take a self-defense course at your earliest opportunity. I don't mean Karate or Kung-##, necessarily. Talk to the police in the nearest city (small towns typically won't have a clue) about courses for women. They generally teach a course that at least gives you a chance - how to respond best in given situations. The ones I've heard of can last from 1 week to 6 weeks.

You are right, Rosewhisper - the family DOES want you to come home. Preferably in one piece, but even that is secondary to just getting there. Take what steps you deem necessary, and don't let ANYBODY push you (not even me)

I do worry about "single Mom". Not that I have a problem with it at all - you is you, and all that. See my other posts on the subject. Just want to make sure that you know you are GOING to spend time away from the guttermonkey (unless the company policies allow you to take him/her/them along - but I'd not count on that). I hope you have somebody utterly trustworthy to look after him/her/them while you are gone (Grandparents, your siblings, etc.) (no, it's none of my business - just want to make sure that no side issues - no matter how important- jump up to surprise you )

    thank you,
i found a workforce agency to help with wia program..so that is good thing and now its the process thing.and i'll have to see what happens from here.
LOL well sleepn is good, but thats usaully when all the (weird) stuff happens here.
heck i was on the hiway today and seen a girl changing next to me had to laugh thought about what ya said.. i'm not gay but i had to laugh loudly.
i only have a truck(little one).soooo... shook my head and went on.
maverick is a descent company, but short people like me (5'1) might not be cut out for that line of work. i know a cpl of drivers that work for them so..
i was looking at crete??????? cr england??? but the info on here well that turned my head a bit... like a million times i want to go to united van lines but exsperience is a must sooooo..... that is on hold. tring figure out a get by company.. who did u say that u drove 4?
i have read so many post here and i can't remember... suffering from alzemeir(sp). my poor brain is computing all this info and its running out storage space tring to remember the impotance people are saying.

i have taken self defence classes and well some are what you said not to take ,but i do have my hand and feet licened due to what i know and if i hurt someone i wont go to jail...that would b bad.... i have took some course with my local departments for this factor and try to keep myself out of trouble....lol that funny it follows me... i have a permit to carry but dot tend to frown at that.

oh yeah, i have agrrangements made with grandparents to help with kids.. they're old enuff to stand there grounds, but needs adults by all means. (11 exspecially, 15 so/so) so they are safe and very taken care of there.

    i thank you again.

The thing about starting with a company, and this is really ANY company, if you can do the first year standing on your head, you've pretty much got it licked and at the same time, are building that experience. As long as you're willing to bust your hind end, I really don't think there's anyone that you can't do a year with just to get the experience.

    Hi Rose,

We live in Missouri also and hubby is considering the trucking career also. Who did you contact to find the information about WIA? We are interested in the information you have gathered.

    Thanks
