And you sure don't want a "Swift" driving school!

I agree. I have been in Grand Rapids 99% of my life, 44yrs. Grand Rapids is a nice city, however, Michigan is not the great state for employment it once was. My dad retired from GM back in the day, great stuff. Both the GM plants in Grand Rapids Metro have been closed up for years now. The one that still exists is for the most part empty. Seems like all the employers around here keep getting smaller and smaller, the big ones are moving out. Personally I would stay out of this state entirely and hopefully I will be out of here soon, thats my opinion. If you have something already set up, Grand Rapids is a nice place, Baker College is known to be a good school and they have a CDL school, however, from my research it is a lot longer than most and very expensive compared to others. I just think DriverToBroker is spot on that it is not a place to find a good job and or even get that initial experience to get into a better job.

    DriverToBroker Thanks this.

I'm a new guy here to the forum and I'm currently a Baker College student in Cadillac... It is a 20 week course and is fairly expensive, also the only PTDI certified school in Michigan (which might be important to some rather then others). It offers very extensive training.

Not to mention, they have job placement, great instructors from different types of truck driving back grounds. I don't know much about other training facilities or "CDL mills", but I am very impressed with what I am learning and or have learned... Soo much I didn't know, that I thought I did..

The cost to go through Baker College is a bit pricey, but in the whole realm of things it's a small price to pay.

Job placement means nothing unless the joobs are above average for new drivers. Any grad can fill out an application for any of the mega OTR TL carriers and get a pre hire.

I understand.. They did have Schneider and ALTL come in for some recruiting. I think there maybe another company or so that might come in too.

I honestly don't really desire to work for either. I want and will do my own job hunting / prospecting, but having good grades, perfect attendance along with the certificates and the backing from the school / program hopefully should help substantially.

Baker is a very well respected college in Michigan and had I been younger or maybe still had access to my GI Bill I probably would have went that route. The original poster of this thread is looking for something quick and inexpensive and I don't think Baker is the solution he is seeking.

I'm sure you will do great with that Baker Training Mike. One of the better certificates you can have in your hand in my opinion.

    Define "a bit pricey".
By which I mean "how much does it cost?"

The best CDL school in the Grand Rapids area is Western Michigan CDL. They are certified, offer CDL A & B classes, have an awesome reputation in the industry, and is the ONLY CDL school in Michigan whose on-staff state testers have approval to test their own students. Check them out on Facebook or online.
