Yea more like I want to really give this a try since I had a great time driving and I've always liked machines but no I don't need this job/career. And with the high turnover rate of drivers I don't feel like I am taking a job from someone who really DOES need the job since there appears to be so many.

Haha I will remember that but I've seen some company trucks that I am not sure 5 or 6K would really improve a truck all that much.

I did and I have those. I will go look at those companies thank you very much for the suggestions! Now I assume before applying it is still in my best interest to complete the refresher course so I at least have some recent driving experience when I apply?

Some may have refresher at the company. Call and ask or apply and let the company decide if you need refresher before they hire you or if they will train or refresh you.

Oh I didn't know companies offered refresher courses good to know. Also it seems a good number of those companies are reefer companies I never thought about driving reefer. What are some of the pros/cons of driving reefer vs Van? Those companies do seem to have nice equipment but one thing that I can obviously ask them about is how the training is done. I had an awful time trying to sleep in a moving truck so I would much prefer a company that does not do team training if there is such a thing.

Forget the APU idea. If they have one use it, if they don't have one idle their truck...it's not like they don't know if they have it or not. The cost of buying the APU is just the start, installation and removal would be too expensive. You may drive for the same company for years, but that doesn't mean that you'll be in the same truck all of that time. They're not going to want to have an APU to swap out every time they need you to change trucks. Apparently you have some money available to you, get some driving experience under your belt then buy your own truck, you can put whatever you want on that.

TransAm doesn't do team training. Didn't think about listing this company before.

There's probably a short form application on the websites. If so, submit that then the company will decide if they want to continue with the long form.
I liked pulling reefers. Lots of night driving when I was doing it, and early morning appointments to unload. Sometimes you get long waits while lumpers unload or load the trailer; just part of the job.
Not all companies do lots of night driving, but I tried to manage my time so I drove at night. Enjoyed the solitude on the open road with my coffee and xm radio.

Yea but I thought trucks from companies won't idle at certain temperatures or is that just not true and any truck will idle no matter what? I also didn't realize drivers swap trucks. Thought it was one of those unless the truck breaks down for good that's your truck. I have read lots horror stories about people buying there own trucks and it being a disaster and since I have basically no clue about this industry I am in zero hurry to buy my own truck.

Go with a company that has Apu then won't have an idle issue.
The truck the company issues to you will be the one you always drive unless it's in the shop for an extended period of time or the company trades it for a new truck. If it's in the shop for an extended time, the company will assign another truck to use until yours is repaired.

I will add them to the list. I realize trucking has no "set schedule" and you will be driving all hours at one point or another but I am much more of a day person than a night person. How often do drivers get to keep a fairly regular schedule? For myself I would envision starting my day between 4-5AM for the simple reason of being able to find a place to park in the evening since it seems truck stops are incredibly over crowded from what I've learned or could I start later and still find a place to park?
