The brakes wouldn't have been smoking, because the can moves instead of forcing the pushrod to rotate the S-cam. The brakes on that wheel simply don't function.

Forget what law it is but every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Its easier to simply push the hanging chamber back than it is to overcome the return spring tension on the brake shoes.

Yup, 20% of the brakes must be inoperative for OOS order. 2 of 14 is 14.2%, so he's good to go.

...which is what I've been saying. Brakes won't lock up, smoke, or do anything else. No need to back the brakes off, cage them, or pinch off the air lines. The brakes on that wheel simply won't function.

I'd cage and pinch the line off just so that I wouldn't have a chamber slamming around under there everytime I touched the brakes.

    windsmith and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Caging not necessary. Just pinch the service line off. It will only move when you release the brakes.

pair of 0/0 jumper cables and a couple sticks of 7018 and you'd be good to go

    Anybody seen Mcgyver?

I'm sure they wouldn't like it but it's not OOS. As stated it doesnt equal a 20 percent loss. It does need tied up really well and fixed ASAP. My opinion is the driver done exactly what one should. Seen a problem, wasn't sure and asked. If he asked here surely he got someone at his company too. Unless of course he is an O/O.

It's easy to jump on a guy from a high horse, just remember sometimes you miss hit the ground in a mud hole and end up looking like a fool
