There are lots of things that make a particular rate a 'great' rate, IMO. Things such as back haul availability, future business from that particular broker, ability to earn at least double or more beyond my operating costs including deadhead miles to the next load and efficient use of my 70, etc.

I hate when bokers and dispatchers use other drivers as the example.I tell themI that's too bad i'm not one of those drivers.I think the broker tells drivers and companies too,the load has to be there or picked up at a certain time to make sure you get there. In other words no lolly gagging..I've had more loads that were FCFS but my company wanted it there first thing in the morning when they opened because they already had a pre assign for me.

Thursday I was given that "rude awakening" that other drivers in our company have given us the reputation that we tend to show up late for our appointments so when it's appt time or just before, your slot can and often is given to someone else and you are SOL.

First off....If you are planning on being a successful O/O....Get the term "Backhaul" out of your mind.....There is no such thing as a "Backhaul"!!!!!!!

That is the term brokers like to use to get you think it's ok to take a cheaper rate on a load....

If you took a load from Denver to Portland and you needed to get back to Denver....The broker will tell you that Portland to Denver is a "Backhaul"...Would not that same load be a "Fronthaul" for the O/O from Portland?

Now for the rest of your comment....

    Know your lane....

I usually run the LA Metro to Denver Lane....I rarely have to DH more than 50 miles to get a load back home....

Sure...I can get loads that leave from LA to Gillette, WY for $3/m....But now there's the DH to either Rawlins....Cheyenne...Or even as far as Fort Collins to get back to Cali.....

    Was that $3/m worth it?

I have also got $5/m to haul live bees from SO-CAL to the middle of ND and had to DH back to either Blackhawk or Rapid....Now that makes sense.....

Very few FB loads from ND anyways.....

ND is like NM...Lots of loads going to the state but ##### little leaves the state...Especially back to CA.....
