The word back haul just sets off a red flag when heard by brokers & other freight movers. try going to a used car lot & say to the salesman I lost my car in a wreck yesterday & I need to buy a vehicle to get to work mon morn. show me what you have that is affordable & in good condition. see what is offered and at what price. your negotiation for the best price is gone. when I used to drive 500-600 miles to the chicago/ohio area & then have my dispatcher look for a RELOAD back, it is different when I am there needing to get home, as opposed to a driver that lives in that area & looking for a good rate to leave home. I am in a great area to get freight. but if I am at home it has to pay good for me to leave home. but if I am 500 miles from home & a broker knows that, because I use the word BACK HAUL, then the broker know's he has the upper hand. my co has had some great rates lately out of my area. $2.85 a hundred for less than 500 miles that rate would be a lot lower if the shipper contacted brokers for drivers who are in my area needing to go north. the shipper know's we live here & we ain't moving for cheap rates.

That's not what I meant at all. I'll admit, I've been out of the loop for a long time, but years ago, your main haul out paid enough, just in case you had to bounce home so you wouldn't lose another main haul. The backhaul was basically a gratuity to pay for your fuel, and clearly, you aren't going to take a backhaul to Seattle when you are based out of Miami. I think we have a basic misunderstanding of what a backhaul actually is.

What's really interesting is something so minor and benign actually "grinds his gears" in the first place.

Doesn't matter if the load is going where you live or not , don't give freight a free ride or work for "fuel money" only because freights headed towards where you're going

Taking away the word doesn't change what it is. Do you really thing everyone would instantly be clueless because you didn't use a certain word?
