As far as I understand it DEF has a chemical reaction with NOx in the exhaust causing it to break down into into other less harmful elements and compounds. This happens under very specific circumstances and not only does it require a high temperature... But I believe it may also generate some heat as a result of the chemical reaction occurring... But I'm not a chemist, and I havent studied chemistry in a very long time. But that is the basics of it as I understand it.

Urea is simply a Nitrogen based fertilizer.... It has been used by the Billions of tons (including all dry and liquid froms) every year all across North America on farmers fields. This amount has been increasing ever since the use and sale of Ammonia Nitrate became highly regulated and documented following the OKC Bombing in 1993. Couple that with the steady decrease of of the use of anhydrous ammoinia... And I would guess that the amount of urea used to manufacture DEF is a VERY small percentage of the overall urea sales world wide.

And any patent on urea expired probably more than 100 years ago....

No. The DPF catches all the smoke.

The fluid gets sprayed into the line further downstream.

The DEF quality sensor can also cause issues, the one on my Mack acts up from time to time, we only get DEF from a 300 gal tank in our yard, every so often I get a "Poor Quality Def" detected message, and when it happens, it triggers a parked regen. Based on the headaches I see my boss/mechanic have with these DEF tanks, I would not want to do anything that causes more.

As I stated, I don't have a degree in chemical engineering, although I was a Physics major many years ago, but didn't make it past my Junior year. Life had other plans for me at the time. But, if I were able to back to college these days, I'd probably try to get a math degree.
    Anyway, Thanks for the info!!!

Mechanic told me years ago the best way to have def problems is keep running it low.. I quit doing that and knock on wood the issues went away.
