I am wondering something,correct me if wrong;when you,(we) cheat on our logs,are we not,playing into the man's hands? (the boss) What I mean is,sure,we make more $$ in the short term,but if EVERYONE would log as it actually happened,6 hours to load in Chicago,3 hours to get out,etc;would not wages have to change in trucking to keep people doin it? Instead,many turn a 14 hour day into an 18-20 hour day,risk everything in doing so,make a little extra cash,but the man owning the truck is the real person coming out on top..If I were a boss man,I would for sure give a big "turkey" to the cheaters on Thanksgiving..
This may be true, but if you are in an accident, I bet DOT changes there tune. Also, if serious injury or death is involved, a lawyer will tear you and your company apart. You will then go from the jail cell behind your seat to the prison cell of the courts liking. Im not being a jerk, thats just what everyone should think about when they wanna break or stretch a rule. Its the times we live in.
What I have been told by DOT when I didn't have enough time to make it was I could drive to the next town with his permission, if the livestock was in danger of dying he would have given permission to complete the run, another 20 minutes past that, I had enough time to get to the next town but not any farther on the 14. I got the load relayed in and an empty brought out so I could leave for the next run from there. I got so I could drive back at night without stopping to nap, so that was no longer a problem. I've also heard from a reliable source that a company on Long Island is no longer allowing drivers to park on their property because they were out of hours. These drivers called their companies and the companies called law enforcement to arrange police escort to a safe parking area, so law enforcement was involved in making it legal for them to drive out of hours. Any comments about either of these situations?
The answer is yes you can cheat them ... However, the driver cannot. They can and will do this from your dispatch. Therefore, your decision making is taken out of the equation.
I have heard of this being done. BUT I would only do it with DOT escort, not just verbal permission from a DOT officer. If animals were involved, I would take my chnaces regardless of what anyone said. Even if they are destined for slaughter.
Sure you can cheat, especially with a team. The company doesn't know whether both of you are in the truck or not... your partner/wife/buddy could be 3,000 miles away.
