Can you just make your own ELD?

It's on the FMCSA registered ELDs list, so it's legit. But it would not be financially practical to develop one's own ELD app for the size of most trucking companies. It's possible it's a private label version of an ELD app developed by another company, and it's also possible that AFS World uses it for their own fleet (if they are a trucking company) but also sells it to other trucking companies.

They're probably separate companies. Same people of course but separate.

 

You can buy an ELD that is branded for you, so that is you can have on the product your name, model number and select the package. You have to go through the process of registering it with the FMCSA.

I know one carrier that did just that; they control the entire system, eliminating the cost for the services for record keeping and managing data.

 

There are shady trucking companies using self-certified ELDs and indications show the companies involved with illegal alien drivers, 356 trucking companies registered physical address in an empty field, companies editing driving time while the truck is in motion, etc are using these self-certified ELDs. The Chicago White Volvo mafia, the Punjab, Serbian, Russian, etc., etc. seem to find these self-certified ELDs are quite useful in their illegal operations.

 

Nothing different than running paper and multiple books in the past. How come back then people weren’t all up in arms about it? Just because they found a loophole for them makes them all bad now.
