Yup, grabbed a load of melons off the load board, picking near Ocala, hauling to Jessup, MD. Not the best rate, but pretty good for coming out of Florida it would seem. Around 975 actual miles (google maps) including deadhead, $2300 to the truck. Loading seems to be going painlessly; they were already in gaylords sitting on the dock.

Yup. We're in the process of moving melons right now and need all the trucks we can find. The Great South Capacity Crunch of 2012 has officially begun!

I have been saving up money to become an O/O. I'd really like to do this, but I guess I wouldn't know where to start when asking for a certain rate.
I live in Michigan, so let's say for example I find a load on the DAT board from somewhere in MI going to Phoenix, and then find a load back from Phoenix going back towards MI or OH or IN or somewhere near.
Could I expect $2 a mile on a 2,000 mile run like that, or is that something I might get $3000 for? or even less?
If it's costing me $3,000 for fuel that week and another $1,000 in operating expenses, then I'd have to make like $1.50 a mile avg that week to make it even worth it.
I don't believe in "backhauls", as I'd just be going anywhere, and the above was just an example, but if one of you took that run, what do you think you could expect and get?
