What is this special insurance for and where do you buy it? Been doing this for 40 years and I ain't heard of that yet. Also, you can go 38000 per closed tandem, 88000 gross, and they don't like spread axles in western Canada but you can buy a permit for it in Alberta.

Cross outta Portal ND driver and follow the route you mentioned, you'll be fine.VLSanders2013 Thanks this.

It's only for BC. They don't accept U.S. insurance. Costs like $40 or something around there.VLSanders2013 Thanks this.

If I were you I would cross at Portal, ND; North Portal, SK. Then I would take 39 to Moose Jaw, 2 to Chamberlain, 11 to Saskatoon, and 16 to Edmonton. Everyone runs 53 footers up there so you are not too long. If you're wheelbase is more than 244" you may have to get a permit though. Plenty of truck stops along that route. Fuel will be more expensive in Canada so fill up just before you enter.

I've never heard of the insurance either, Plan to go with my tandems closed I just need to make certain that our 52'step does not exceed the max wheelbase of 12.5m or 41'.

If this is your first time ever going into Canada, I'd do it as easy as possible with the routing, which it looks like you have. Fewest road changes as possible. Just my two cents.
Secondly, you'll need the a PARS Notification which will have your tags numbers from both your trailer and truck. It looks like this...

Thirdly, you'll need the Commercial Invoice.
You broker has to give Canadian Customs 3 HOURS notice before you cross. At least that's what all of my paperwork always states.VLSanders2013 Thanks this. -
Thank so much for confirming my route. I have a prostar with only 220 or so wheel base. What concerns me is the wheel base of my step with the tandems closed. I can't mearsure it exact til morning and its driving me nuts. Alberta say that 41'-1/8" is max from King to middle of tandems. I have one of LandStar"s 52' combo steps.

LSU hummm.. Do you remember Dick Maile former basket ball player from way back? No big deal, he was my neighbor and I worked for him a few years. Apparently he was awesome in his time.

I would be surprised if they gave you a problem with that. See lots of guys running 53' tridems with their axles to the back. You will also see plenty of double 53 footers, most of those guys have the axles to the back of the lead trailer.VLSanders2013 Thanks this.
