I am bringing this back to life...I want to get my Canadian authority. I live in Cleveland Ohio and it seems silly to have a line in the sand keeping me from running! I am going to dig in to all this 1st thing Monday...

When I filed everything I saved quite a bit of money doing it on my own. The Ontario C.V.O.R alone you will save a couple hundred $. A permit service just adds their cut (usually 25%-50%) above the actual cost and they won't convert it over to the U.S doller. So right now with the exchange rate as lopsided as it is you will pay an additional 23%.
It was $250 Canadian when I filed. Then a $50 renewal fee every year.

Your Canada Carrier code is free from the Canada Border Service Agency. You need this # for your PARS barcode stickers. Used for going into Canada.

You get your S.C.A.C. code from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association. Cost is $74 per year. I did it online with them. They will email you your number and then you need to forward it to the email number they provide. It goes to some nameless jack*** in Washington D.C. that you have no way to contact other than email. And he won't respond back. Just hope he gets it and it's done right so you don't end up stuck in Canada like I did the first time.Your S.C.A.C code is part of your PAPS barcode stickers. Used for crossing back into the U.S.

I use Blue Ridge International Permit service to do the actual crossings. What I like is that the actual owner is doing the work. I have his personal cell and email numbers and for emergencies I have bothered him all hours of the day. Weekends include. He's bailed me out of a jam countless times where the Customs Broker for the load screwed up. I've offered to mail him a $100 bill several times to take his wife out on the town to make up for ruining his evening. He turns it down every time. Says that's his job.
Guys like this are almost extinct in office people in this day and age. When your up *** crick in the middle of nowhere this is priceless.
He charges a flat $25 crossing fee. Unlike alot of the others that are so much a month whether you cross or not.

I ordered the barcode stickers through him. You can get them cheaper direct, but I wanted to make darn sure they were going to be readable to the scanner.
Can't help you on Quebec. I've been meaning to jump through their hoops myself.
I know the Ontario C.V.O.R takes a long time to process. 2-3 months when I did it.

Lostkeys, rank and Mattflat362 Thank this.

Great stuff man! I tend to agree....I did all the MC DOT PUCO IFTA HUT stuff myself so far....but man it was/is a lot to take care of!

But doing it from the ground up makes it easier to understand for sure..

More or less. 13 driving. 10 hrs off but only 8 need to be consecutive. 36 hr reset. they are other differences like you can stop the 14 hr clock up to 16 hrs. Also there is a two hr deferral that lets you stretch the 16 to 18 but you need to give the extra 2 hrs back the next day....must take 10 consecutive instead of 8.

.....best thing about your '88 Pete is you are exempt from the speed limiter laws that ON and QC have

    Mattflat362 Thanks this.

It's like anything. Daunting at first, but after a guy knows the ropes it's easy. After your all set up its a 10 minute job to renew everything. They send out renewals reminders so you don't forget.

After you get set and ready you should look into your cell phone plan. It's really easy to rack up a big bill roaming. I wasted $ trying to get by not using it at first. Now I got on a Verizon plan that costs an extra $2.00 per 24hr period. Everything is billed like normal. The first call/data you use over the border costs $2.00 then you get a 24 hr window that is billed at your normal rate. After that another $2.00 and repeat.
For B.C your ins. agent needs to get you on file with them. Then they will send you a certificate for your permit book.
Then there's the metric system.:pottytrain1: Just remember 4.11 meters is roughly 13'6". Burn that in the old brain somewhere. The first lower looking RR bridge with a low clearance sighn in meters will make you pray you did the conversion right.

    Mattflat362 and rank Thank this.
