I am looking into a tank company that has 2/3 of its loads going into Canada. My question is regarding the wheelbase limit. I know that in Canada you cannot have more than a 244 inch wheelbase to pull a 53 foot trailer or b doubles. I also know the overall length is no more than 75 feet. However, if I pull a tank that is no more than 40-45 feet long, do I still need to follow the 244 inch law, or can I use a 265 or 285 wheelbase tractor. I will be going to New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec. Can give more exact locations if needed. Also, I know that with an apu I can get to 285, but without one can I still be 265/285, or is a permit needed. Thanks.

Hey,
I operate a 280wb Peterbilt that is registered in New Brunswick. I pull a 53ft tandem. The rules in the Maritimes are 75.5ft overall and I haul through NS all the time. I had to purchase a wheelbase permit for Quebec but that is simple enough on their Transport Quebec website. The wheelbase rules in Ontario are a little different and you will need to know a few more things for that but again I operate there every week under the SPIF#1 rule with a trailer wheelbase reduction to 11.87mtrs(Slide tandems forward to 11.87 from centre of drives) not exceeding 35% overhang. As for the Other provinces I am not too sure but believe I can get a permit for MB & SK but would only be allowed a 48ft trailer in AB but not too sure as I never go that way. I know it's not the perfect answer that you may of wanted but it points you in the general direction. No permits for the Maritimes,Wheelbase Permit for Quebec and you need to know the rules for Ontario.
If you want I can send you the print out I got from St Catherines scale in Ontario explaining the rules for Ontario.I would post it on here but not sure how to shrink it for the forum. I think it only applies to trucks built after 2005 though.
Good luck,

Thanks for the response. The tractor will most likely be on a 265, and 45 foot tanks. Basically, I would just need a permit for Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario. Possibly Novia Scotia, but will have to confirm if I go there. If you could send me the print out in a pm or e mail, that would really help. I can give you my email via pm of that is easier. The thing is, I can't slide my tandems on a tank. Thanks again.

Yep I have sent you a PM if you want I can try and send the pdf file to your email.
I just read your reply again, just to clarify ... You don't need a permit for the any of the Maritimes provinces that includes NB,NS & PEI. as long as you don't exceed 75.5ft . Quebec will allow your wheelbase under permit. Ontario however will allow long wheelbase tractors under the SPIF#1 rule if you can meet the requirements.
Send me that email and I'll get the rule sent over.
Supernova.kw550cat Thanks this.
