I will say if I had started at OP's age I would stay with it. I was told the first 2 years is the trick. If you made it past that you are golden the rest of the way.

I'm sorry it has become ridiculous and as this thread shows, it's really sad that in our own work we are not respectful and helpful to one another as we used to be.
Much has changed and I think that change bothers me the most. As an older woman I started in this with many issues that now would get companies sued. I sucked it up because I also knew I was paving the way for other women. Now I pick my battles and it's very seldom about my gender and unfortunately more about problems with slip seating and others that don't play fair.
This has been brought on by the companies creating and nourishing this dog eat dog situation. It's the kick your other driver to the curb to get their load.
I love driving, even the "sunday" drives in my personal vehicle. But I'm not sure if I had it to do over again know what I do I would pic this.
We all need to do what nourishes our soul too, which working on the hamster wheel rarely does.
I deal with it by raising hell then resigning myself to a I will not be like them no matter what they do. Since you see this already as it is, we really need more people like you :)

I'm kinda near the middle road. But the main thing I keep coming back to is to each his own. I he doesn't want to drive then he doesn't need to be out there driving.

I'm an old man now, but when I was in my 20's there was no way I'd of wanted to be OTR.
Plus the pay your dues is propaganda, many highly paid and lowly paid drivers out there never did OTR.

    Insult to injury lol
I used to mess with the other drivers at holidays and tell them, " hey such n such store has biggest Thanksgiving turkeys to use your certificate"
We get nothing but if they think you got something they didn't hell breaks lose. Of course I tell them before they whip out their cell phones

Trucking is a way of life, a journey. It's not for everyone for a variety of very good reasons.

The ... roughness or difficulties in the thread is something that might be reflected today in companies that churn out 50 trainees in orientation and could care less if they lost 30 of those 50 within a month because every week a new pool of 50.

Airline Pilots do not have 50 people every week climbing over each other to fly. Not in every company.

Some companies frankly are &^%$ Most of my life was with them because I did not know better. Later in my years I learned what class was. Which is why I try not to be too rough on people today.

Most people in trucking do not see half of what I saw and there are those who saw far worse than me. I consider myself relatively lucky. Just takes a bunch of hard bought lessons by either good trainers, States or company bosses who actually cared enough to yell at me. Punishment goes hand in hand with that 1000 dollar bonus haul when it's done right.

What's with all the hate towards OP? I am considering switch from wrenches to driving in the next year or 2. I'm a millenial as well and honestly, you couldn't pay me enough to do OTR. Nothing to do with age or anything and especially nothing against the guys who love it. But after reading on here about OTR, no thank you.
