I gaurantee you can haul freight , pick it up and deliver it using a permit as long as there is a cdl holder sitting in the passenger

Prime Inc's training program does exactly that , a guy comes in with a permit and goes over the road delivering freight for 3 to 6 weeks before coming back to test for his license

Let me interject here. I am 100% sure that I am unsure of the correct answer. That being said, I am glad you asked the question. Also, I think it is great that someone with a learners permit is allowed to haul freight so that we can keep the rates low. Lord knows those of us with experience could use more drivers out there running cheaply.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll try to convince the guy that it'd benefit me to drive with some actual weight for experience sake.

If you are under the control of another qualified driver who is training you, then it is simple - depends on your employment status and the insurance company policy for that company.
However you are not allowed to drive with placard hazmat material on the vehicle.
This comes from Michigan state police a couple years back.Wakum6 Thanks this. -
Here's the thing. It's actually not. The gears actually make sense with a load. Truck stops better. Backing and slow maneuvering is the same. With a top heavy load you should take curves slower, but that's all on you, not the load.
Learn how to drive an empty trailer. It's easier to drive a loaded one, so don't worry about the quality of training.Wakum6 Thanks this. -

We have trained four or five new CDL drivers, and every one of them goes on at least 6 long haul (800 mile) delivery runs with the trainer, while on permit. Loads qualify as tanker loads (24 220 gallon tanks). Other than trying to log it legally, nary a problem.
