If the vehicles moving. Bluetooth only. All phones. That's the only way. If not there will be a way around it.

Does not solve problem if you are a passenger and want to use your phone for any other purpose... need a way to only block the drivers phone from call or text or whatever is decided must be blocked.

Ya it solves the problem. You don't use it. What did you do before "smart" phones? Start doing it again.

I don't know but if the truck can control your phone then the phone can control the truck can't it? Wouldn't big brother be in control then? What about liability?

Not that I am for this, but the only thing I could see that could really deter commercial drivers from using the phone in while driving is a camera facing the driver. Designed somewhat like a black box on a plane so it can't be altered. Again I am not for this sort of solution but in my opinion it'd be the only way to capture the true story leading up to the crash and passengers could still text away without being unfairly penalized by some device that blocks signal.

I know this truck burnt, but if they had some kind of black box that could survive through such scenarios investigators may be doing more than just speculating on the cause of this crash. I've yet to see fatigue or a medical issue be considered as possible causes for this crash.

My company uses driver facing cameras. It’s not a deterrent. The cameras only activate in a hard brake event. Add to the fact that they are illegal in Canada. Sysco in Quebec just won their case.

There you go. We should claim truck drivers are a visible minority and it's against the law for them to discriminate against us the way they do. And by the way, where would you like the ELD screwed to the dash in your new Cadillac?

A driver facing cam does not prevent the driver from using the phone while driving. It's just recording the failure.
All it is about, the failure has to be prevented and not recorded.

Maybe this is an idea, if we are so bent on technology fixing a problem it created. Cadillac now has a self driving feature where it tracks where you are looking and if you aren't looking forward, it slows the car. Possibly be adapted to detect a cell phone or otherwise inattentive driving? I am not at all for these inward facing cameras - just throwing this out there as perhaps a possible idea. If it's sole purpose was to slow vehicle and has no recording capability - would that change opinions?
