Fuel efficiency has a lot of variables. I'd be surprised to see one that efficient unless it was on cycle and the freight was of a similar temp as the outside ambient temps, then it actually might exceed that. I think on average the 2016 TK unit I'm pulling gets .5 per hour on average. Load, cycle or continuous, and outside ambient temps will make this vary.
Carrier or TK

How does the engine preheat work on these units? Does it automatically turn on when the temp is at a certain degree?

TK, only because they run slower and quieter, have a better dealer network, and the 120VAC service doesn't depend on the engine turning a generator.
I managed to keep a 1st gen Tripac in service to just over 30k hours before I gave up on fixing it. It has since been traded off with the truck it was on and I'm now using a battery powered solution that will probably end up with solar panel assist in the not too far future. -
Green apu . The best one ive used . They use Kubota engines and car parts to make their apus . They are thermostat style apus so you just need to set the temp up and rest will be taken care of by apu . Their service and warranty is top notch and they take care of their customers . Plus easy to do oil changes. I got one on my 389 from lemont ,il for 11000$ out of shop price . And the installation time was 1 day .

I'll stick with my portable generator and portable ac..
Quieter. Cheaper to run, I could replace the entire system ever year for 8 years and still cheaper than the cost of 1 apu...
Just my two centsJoeyJunk Thanks this. -
Are there any grants or rebates going on right now to help me finance an epu?
