I'm retired. I have a .22 magnum 6 shot. 3 compound cross bows with razer sharp tip arrows. plus I have a couple flare guns. not to mention the nice collection of hunting riffles and shot guns. which that what they face if some one manages to make past the 2 mountain dogs the walk around the yard. they weigh 181 lbs each. and stand 6'1'' on there back legs. and are Territorial by nature.
I LOVE THOSE DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!! I keep a 6 D cell Maglite with a pointed battery cap and wasp spray in my car. Spraying wasp spray in someone's eyes will make them drop like a sack of potatoes. I also have my hands for self-defense (Krav Maga).
First lets make a distinction. A taser actually shoots two barbed prongs connected to wires from the taser and embeds into the target. They have to be surgically removed. OTOH a stun gun creates an electrical arc between two metal posts on the front of the gun. The voltage varies from one stun gun to the next. But they will all put a man on the ground. In most states you have to be a police officer to own a taser. They are very expensive ($1,000-$2,000). Most online sellers require proof that you are a cop before they will ship one. Stun guns are legal in most states and I used to sell them out of my truck for $25-$35 each. At times I would have a dozen or more in my truck. A DOT officer turned my truck inside out at a weigh station because they detected my bird dog and never said a word about the stun guns. So, if you stick with a stun gun you are probably ok in most states. I would stay away from the tasers.
I know you cant take a taser to Canada. Course if you dont go there, that wont be an issue. I have only felt I had need of a weapon one time in 20 yrs. Guy jumped on my step in Chicago demanding money. He got a lit cigarette in the face. He fell off the step, and I grabbed a gear and got the heck out of there. I have since quit smoking, so I dont know what I would do now.
