Let me add to this. The problem people have with learning to back is that they focus on the end of the trailer and they dont get under it in time. They tend to start getting under it when it is lined up with where they want it but becauze the trailer continues to jack for 8 more feet the new guy finds that hes missed his mark and doesnt know why. What he should be doing is watching his tandems and picture the arc you want the tandems to follow then as long as you keep the tandems on that arc you can slip it right it. Second mistake is in making large corrections. A newer guy will do a pull up and pull up twenty feet or more causing himself to...in essence...completely repeat the entire backing just from a different starting point when. Usually a few feet and straightening the tractor is all that is needed.

GA Dawg .. as long as you get the basics in school.. you will have lots of time in your trainers truck to get more wheel time. Dont get to hard on yourself if it takes a little time.. just get the basic idea of which way to turn the wheel to make the trailer go the way you want. All that fine tuning will come. GOod luck to ya! If you have any young children.. buy them one of those toy trucks.. and use it to practice when their not looking lol

Don't LOL too much at the toy truck. Powder Blue is leading you right, the toy truck is one of the best tools for understanding how the tractor and trailer move together. They will actually use one in school. I have heard of many people who could not get backing down, and after one day of working with the toy truck and watching how it moves they got it. In class While the teacher was talking I would often mess with it and watch how it turned. Its a solid suggestion

NP, just remember, use every resource and every tool you have, but don't get too uptight. You WILL learn, its not as hard as you might think. It comes easily if you just learn a few tricks. I remember when I was having such a hard time parallel parking. Harold came over and explained one little, simple, trick. After that I nailed that truck in the hole like it belonged there. Its all about little tricks.

JUST curious, what was the hard part of Parking that the student didnt get?[/QUOTE]
Most of us had hard time with alley dock at some point. But you'll have your good and bad days in the beginning. It's not all that bad though...it's just all that pressure...the fact that you have to get it within few days, and the fact that somebody just got sent home...puts all that pressure on you
