Sleeping over the steering wheel is not considered off duty, sleeper or anything but driving as, well, you ARE behind the wheel.
As for sleeping in a tent? It's off duty and as stated there is NO anything that defines off duty except that you are not loading, unloading, driving, doing repairs or anytime else called truck related. We also do not do as they do down under and DOT was watching it(unless they quit) which was keeping a diary of your off duty time in an official book. Yes , Australia was looking at it and doing trials on it many years ago. I've never been there so IDK if it ever went into effect.
BUT! Modern technology is now on your side! Does that cell phone you carry have a camera? Does it let you GEO tag pictures? If so then take a picture of your tent and sleeping bag and maybe even get someone to take one of you in the tent and then one of the truck in that sequence of pictures.
The old saying a picture is worth a thousand words. You have a few thousand words with time, date and location stamped in the picture. This should take all that worry off of you!
Take it a step father and when you go to line one off duty put the information in the remarks section. do the line then town name, state then KOA Camp Ground. You will also have a receipt to back that one up unless you stop somewhere in BFE and just park and setup camp off the road.
