sounds like you may want to look at Roehl. they had a slip seat program like that but you had to live in certain areas to do it.

I've never heard of a "casual driver". Please elaborate.

I doubt they would hire you, most of the companies want you out for 7 days before you get a day off. An most of swift is out for 2 weeks unless you're regional, then your out for 7 days then off for a 34 hour reset then another 7. Swift sucks anyways, try roehl, or jr schugel I know they had a 7 on 7off type program going. Oh we have a guy that works during the week for us here in mn, then he takes a load on the weekends, usually down to indiana then back to mn. He leaves out friday night and is home sunday afternoon. If you could find a small company that does that maybe you might find a 4 on 3 off type deal.

A casual driver is a "as needed" driver. No set schedule, normally. Kind of "on call". Does vacation fill-ins or if a driver calls in sick. A lot of truck companies use a temp agency for casual drivers. (local companies).

Isn't a casual a substitute or a floater that goes where needed (no set truck or route).
All dispatches will be critical, late, or HOT.
As in roll now we'll figure out your time off after this load is delivered.
I would expect lots of downtime at the terminal waiting for the next crisis.
In that case I would expect lots of time off when you don't want it and no time off when you do.

Or are you talking about "shag" runs where you deliver a load dropped at the terminal early by a long haul driver? (local P&D)

i know "casual drivers" from union shops..... they get NO benefits, but a higher hourly pay rate. once they make it to regular driver, THEN they get benefits, but also too, the hourly pay drops a bit.

i just do not know of any major carrier that has "casual drivers"......

they either are employed drivers, full time, or not......it would be easier for ANY company to call on a driver leasing company instead.

Roehl DOES have a slip seat fleet......7 on 7 off, and then there is the 7 on 3 off, 7 on 4 off. They are still doing it I just checked their web site but like I said you have to live in a specific area of the country to be a part of that.
