Why would you even buy a newer cat motor? 100% junk

I drove a 08 KW W900 last summer for a few months with the new Cummins. I wasn't impressed with the MPGs, or the power! Supposedly set at 485 HP.

I guess you could do the crate motor and glider kit to get what you want, all of the new motors are works in progress, particularly the particle traps and regenerating those same. The computer has to run the motor and computers are known to have glitches and bugs, these all take time to work out.

The ISX I have been driving hasn't been an easy motor to figure out, it shuts down and won't tell you why and it's a pre-egr motor, lots less to go awry. I think they will eventually get them all up and running, it just takes time out in the real world to show the flaws and figure out how to fix them.

How well will the companies stand behind them? Will they compensate you for lost time and poor performance?

My bet is it will take court action to force the manufacturers to fix their mistakes and make good on the promise of what buying a new truck used to mean, a reliable and affordable money-maker and not a piece of junk that is always in the shop.

I never drove one but i hear they are far more reliable then the new CATs. As some one already mentioned Caterpillar plans to pull out of the truck engine game by 2010, i guess ill be driving my 03 KW untill the oil supply runs out. That being said im very disapointed in caterpillar as they have never let me down yet and i do believe they made some of the best engines ever put into trucks, my opinion. Oh well no more new trucks for me, guess ill buy a 1950s needle nose Pete stick it in the barn and throw a 3406E 15.8L bad boy in it :D

    I wonder how many times a 3406E can be rebuilt? :D :D

My love for Kittys is well known. There was a former clown here that got banned after he became badly unhinged when I expressed my distaste for Diptroits and began making accusations he couldn't prove.

Hehe.... My dads 3406E has 2,345,000 miles on it and has been inframed once by me. Still has original head... New turbo, injectors, water pump and oil cooler at 1,700,000 or so. I put new cylinder packs in it at about 1,450,000. Also have a buddy with a 3406A mechanical with over 5 million on the block, been rebuilt 4 times. As long as the block aint junk they can keep going like the energizer bunny, and even then you can always shim the liners if needed. I love kitty cats i dont see how people say parts are expansive for them, i just talked to a guy here in nogales, his N14 dropped an injector, cummins charged him 820$ to replace ONE injector.... I couldnt believe it.

as long as they keep building parts.

We had an 89 379 with a 3406. It was a west coast team tuck with a 96inch sleeper. by the time we got the truck and then had the sleper built and installed we didn't start running it untill 1990. It ran west coast every week of it's life. At 750k we sold it to the lady who was one of the people running the truck. she then leased it onto us and ran it team with her husband. Last I heard that truck had almost 2million miles with only a set of bearings ever done to it. That lady was super anal about maintenance on that truck. That was back in the mid 90's last I heard from her and she had sold it and got out of trucking. From what I hear that truck is still running west coast weekly to this day. it has to have around 6 million + on it by now if it's been running team all this time

I hope they keep building parts, i think they will make more money of that then the new 08 motors. But they are getting expansive, i remember when a reman 3406E 550hp injector was 280 bux exchanged, today same injector runs around 420-450 bux!!!

they will. They can't just abandon everyone with a cat. If I remember right they are obligated to support there product or 10 years. After that it will come down to what they sell and what they don't.
There is allot of guys around still running 3408's how long has it been since they made those motors? you can stil buy the engine parts

    The Challenger Thanks this.

I would imagine that if CAT stops making their parts an aftermarket builder might pick up the slack.
