That would work with some coordination but @truck 307 would need to set it up with a trustworthy individual on his end so I get my ecm returned to me.
-
If im not mistaken, this is the third ecm on this truck that has done the same thing? The original one, a loaner used one, and then the most current new one that got installed?
Ecm parameters cant cause a missfire. Copying over the progammable parameters will not cause any issues. Im assuming the base file would have been downloaded fresh from Cat.
The most programable parameters can do is limit rpm in each gear. For the ecm to cause a missfire it would have to be sent bad information.
Injector drivers can fail, but once they fail they stay dead. Also very highy unlikely 3 ecms have the exact same issues.wore out, Oxbow, spsauerland and 2 others Thank this. -
Thanks all for support.
Yes I've had 3 ECM's, each running my original file as transferred from my original ECM which could be the issue.
Again this past weekend I started the truck a few times , putting it in / out of my shop for minor things ( lights replaced, grease it etc..)
Now, as expected, all day ( so far) all running tip top. This is always the case after I start / stop the cold engine on the weekend and Put it to work Monday .
Get home 1am Tuesday and it sits 10 hour's or so before I leave again.
Tuesday and every day thereafter it stumbles pop's and power very low from the get go , and that's how it runs all day.
In warmer / summer temps my engine produces too much heat and my ( near new) rad struggles to keep temps under control as power is low and chugging etc is very prevalent under mild grade pulling in the last 3 gears, and I can't use 18th gear loaded as it just won't even hold road speed.
It's as though my ECM isn't " in the know" what fuel is to be put to the injectors ( which CAT replaced all 6 late last year )
No smoke out the pipes. Just violent popping and stumbling, enough to back off the big nut on rear tail of tranny, and cause rear tranny seal to leak .
And besides my tranny being only one year old when I got this truck 30 months ago, I had it pulled, torn down and checked. Last year I had it completely replaced with a brand new tranny after CAT tried passing the buck saying it was tranny related, but then acknowledged it was engine related after I spent $7k.
What a challenge.
Glad I've got you all in support. -
I've heard stories about tooling like drill bits and the like being stuck in passageways of cylinder heads and causing a myriad of issues. I'm beginning to wonder if something along this line is your issue. It would limit fuel flow/volume when you need it the most, top 3 gears, low power, engine overheating....but it doesn't explain the Monday "cure" you described.

Ya. It's bizarre that's for sure.
Today it ran tip top, not a hickup not a stumble. And it's always after the truck doesn't work for a couple days yet was started 2x or more during. And when in a shop for a day or two ( most likely for the same reason, they started it a time or two )
So many times I drove out of CAT after they worked on it thinking " ya..it's finally fixed".....NOT !!
Mechanical problems don't fix themselves in such a manner, electrical or memory related ( ECM) just might be the cause.
O what a celebration it will be ....one day. -
I’m not good with electrical diagnosis aside from what I can see visually and repair. But seems it has to be a wire in harness somewhere. The heat off these newer engines cause havoc especially on injector harnesses getting brittle at 1 yr old sometimes. Gotta be a wire somewhere. Mr Obvious strikes again!!!

I can get it to Detroit. As long as it’s east of Ms river Don’t know how far from Windsor / Detroit OP is, but maybe an option. I sure wouldn’t trust fed ex with it. How much would UPS cost? Never heard of that being a problem. Maybe he’s way up north
bigguns Thanks this. -
@truck 307 explained in detail what would need to done to cross ship an ecm. I suspected that to Ontario it would be ridiculously expensive. He confirmed that.

A quick trip across the boarder in a 4 wheeler. Pretty common thing up here. People do it everyday
