I have one guy with the full conversion including 70pin ecm. has 8502 squirts with 800hp cam and 575hp 7CZ file. it puts over 610hp to the ground as it works every day with the 0000 BW non wastegated turbo.

he's averaging about 500ltrs less on the same runs and weights as before the conversion over about 5000km. so he's putting another $500/week in his pocket after the conversion.. and his makes good grunt.

2 others have the stock 6nz cam and 8501 squirts with an early 550hp 6nz file. they both report about a 280-300 litre saving a week on the same run with same weights over about 2800km. they also have the 0000 turbo

Ever heard of machine shops repairing camshafts? One can lobe and a rocker are like this so I was going to buy a new cam but the guy at the machine shop said they can repair them.....

I do know that they can flame spray and built up some metals. We used to have metal rollers built up, but the metallurgy was hardly the same.
From the picture, it seems like there is a fault in the metal and it came apart. Slag in the casting. That camshaft isn't that old, is it?

No it's not that old, the rest of it is in great shape. When my head gasket blew out I drove it 80km letting it get pretty hot so I assume that's where the damage came from.

Cummins ISX CM870's had a national back order on cams at least five years back and I got a pair that been spray welded and reground to put in a truck that I was overhauling. Quality seemed great a truck is still running with no issue. Cost was less than half.

Well, then there's your answer! The things that machine shops can do now is nothing short of amazing.

I spun a bearing on my Can am quad. Sent the crank out. They cut it down, chrome plated it and ground it to size. Still running now.
If the machine shop is reputable go right ahead. About all you get better with a new one is a year of parts warranty.
