ET2007 will work with Comms adapter III Ok as will most versions. However Comms adapter III is a dog of a thing and is so hard to get working due to most USB ports not supplying enough Current to make them work.
What most are doing is Connect the Comms III to the machine first and power it up then connect ET.
I find if I use a USB double adapter and pick up power from two USB ports its more consistent.
Cat is looking at releasing new Firmware to fix the Com adapter III conection problems but don't hold your breath!

Yes you will need CDL for Earthmoving.. what ET License does it show in ET? Sounds like a restricted one.
Some older Earthmoving equipment ran Both ATA & CDL but most later stuff just runs CDL.

I guess I'd be ok with a comm 2 adapter for my 1997 3406E. Now where to get one for a reasonable price?

Comms 3 wont come up in preferences unless you install the CD that comes with Comms 3. Once the Comms 3 toolkit is installed ET will recognize it and as such be able to connect using Comms3..... If your USB port has enough juice to keep it powered up.

Although I have not tested it in 2007A I do know it works in 2007C Ok so I cant say for sure about 2007A

Acording to me your Jerd2129 is good

Its pretty easy to get Cat ET with a subscription. I have my own generator for licensing. Lots of ways to get a licensed Cat ET for free
