I have used both and quality is virtually the same of Cat vs IPD. To me it comes down to what they do if you have an issue. I used an IPD kit in a recent C13 overhaul. They were short a piston for a kit, so they next day aired the kit two days later with free shipping. It used a little oil @ first, but after break in has done very well. I have a Cat kit do the same thing. I always disassemble the cylinder pack kits too except for ones that don't use a snap ring to retain the wrist pins.

CAT is by no means junk, though their quality has took a downward turn. On the same hand not all but a few aftermarket companies have really stepped up their game. I am also a fan of American made.

There was a time I never took the time to take a liner pack apart. Till I had a very good customer engine go to using oil and I had to eat it. No chose to eat it. It's not the screw up that hurts it's how you handle it. He also seen the packs come assembled. Us taking care of it like we did went a long way.

Way back about 2005 I had drivers in my trucks and was working for the CAT dealer. A 3406C factory reman was installed in a #### nice Pete. Used a gallon of oil every 6 to 7 hundred miles CAT said she was in spec leave it be. Can't say that really ever set well with me. That said I won't own a truck with anything else.

For whats its worth, our shop does alot of platinum kits in a year. Never pulled the kits apart before assembly. Only ones burning oil are where it didn't get dynoed and sat and idled instead of getting worked.
Have seen a couple issues with ovaled liners, Cat stood behind em.
4 years warranty also means alot. Had one earlier this year that snapped a crank a couple months after install. CAT paid for a new crank and everything.
Cat has got more stingy on warranty claims, however no major issues yet. They are starting to crack down on modified engines as well. We still have gotten warranty on em, just gotta push a lil harder.
I know other people have had worse issues with Cat, just saying its not all doom and gloom.
I wouldn't think twice about putting a factory CAT platinum in my truck
