Speaking of tstats, yesterday was a cold drive to Des Moines. Temps were like 15 degrees and i was at 80k with our '03 Freightliner with the 425 c15. Darn thing wouldnt get above 130 or so going up a good hill and on the flats and downhill would cool down to about 110-115. On the uphills, i could get a wee little bit of heat from the vents. I am assuming one of the stats stuck open because our other truck which is a twin will still run about 180 on these days. Are they hard to change and would it be cheaper to get them from cat or from freightliner?

NICEGUY if you don't have a winter front cover,it will heat help heat your engine up to operating temp to run your heat.
-
So what is the best temp thermostat to run? Stock or cooler? I live in TX and run alot in the south and it get's freakin hot in TX!
-
just going off the advice on this thread i'd say the cooler stats 185 or a little cooler.my mechanic says the stock stats won't make the fan come on til 200-210 deg.
-
Thermostats dont control fan temp, thats controlled by the ECM. No matter what thermostats you fit the fan will always come on at the same temp, 217F if its C15 or Acert. Thermostats are to control minimum engine temp, maximum temp is fan controlled.

ok thanks for clearingt hat up JAS,

you can reset your ecm to turn the fan on at a lower temp if you want.i have mine set to 210.
-
If the fan comes on at 212 and I'm running at 175 then I'm showing 10 degrees cooler than I'm running, good to know, thanks. BTW, yesterday I was going to replace my REGULATORS (in CAT speak).
