Why is this 903 engine keep coming up, compleatly differnt then a 3408 and nothing to do with the posted original ?? The guy wants to know about a cat 3408 , not a cummins 903.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think the 3408 is probably not the best way to go for a money making truck. It would sure be cool, but cool dont pay the bills! Sounds like it was a great engine in its day , but its day has probably come and gone. I would like to keep this thread going as you guys are a wealth of information and I appreciate you all taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences. I will have alot more questions yet about these older engines and trucks as its really what i have my heart set on. I know lots say dont let your ego come into buying a truck, its not an ego thing its just that i want to enjoy what i drive. I want to enjoy owning and working with a piece of equipment that has some appeal to me. So once again thank you all for the replies and please keep the information coming on my further questions:biggrin_25514:

I run a 3408 with about the same setup I have 3:55's. Believe it or not locally it will give me pretty close to 5. But as soon as I leave town and get out on the road, it drops quite a bit. I pull a 6 axle loboy grossing up to 120,000 #"s here in Colorado. It is not uncomm0on to see it down around 3 when in the mountains. I average around 4.2. Hope this helps, they sure are fun though. I always said " If you cant afford the fuel, you ain"t chargin enough".

IMG_1485.JPG Seen a W900 with a 3408 at MATS this year, beautiful truck, engine was just as clean. Think I have a pic of it here somewhere.

I would say that's way to high for the mountains with that weight and that engine. My 3406 averages 6.6 mpCDNg (~5.5 US) in the adirondacks and poconos grossing 80,000 southbound and 35,000 northbound at 60 mph.

Measured in US gallons, I bet you're looking at mid to high 3's if you're loaded both ways.

There's a 359 for sale on Kijiji with a 3408 that pulls a grain train in MB. Maybe call and ask him.

EDIT: Can't believe I got suckered into a zombie thread from 2012.

There was an O/O locally that had a new one, and there were quite a few problems with it right from the get go. Too many years ago, as I do not recall the issues.

I remember running one night out on I-80 in PA with a guy that had one, and he complained at how quickly it was chewing up drive tires...
