Is this right? I was told the head gasket set was around $400 to $500 a week ago, just called to order and the guy says almost $800, at $400 I taught it was expensive but I understood it's a Caterpillar thing, then This?

Holly cow, I really love the power of the Cat but it's beginning to look like a BMW or Mercedes, they are good but way over rated, same as Yamaha outboard motors.

I'm going to repeat my self when people used to ask me which one is the best engine out there, my answer was always Cummins, this was way back when the Big Cam era, then somebody will say Cat is better and I will reply back, tell me what you can do with a Cat that I would not be able to do with a Cummins, but I will tell you a few things I can do with a Cummins that you would not be able to do with the best of Cats.

    done with my rant.

is this right about that price, did the guy at Cat gave me a price for something other than the head gasket set, last week?

That's why you always ask for the part number when pricing parts from any dealer in any brand. Right the price of each out beside each part number. To be honest we have no way of knowing and neither do you at this point

At most places there are 3 price codes. Depending on who you are depends on which price you get. List price is always outrageous. Some parts guys never give list price they either run you under a better customer or have a password to over ride it. If the next guy you talk to doesn't rate high enough to rate a password to over ride it or think to run you under a better account then list it is.

You might have to buy those exhaust manifold gasket as well so ask about those. Oh and injector o-rings.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Now that you've mentioned this, it might not be all that bad, but I would call back tomorrow and have them itemized the whole set, as far as I remember it comes with manifold gaskets, injectors o ring, manifold studs, nuts (no spacers), thermostats and gaskets, and the whole nine yard.

If it does it still high but better than just head gaskets and O' rings.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

The last genuine CAT head set I got did not have the exhaust sleeve gaskets and I am pretty sure the injector orings were not in there as well. I think that it was for a BXS cat.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

The price. I can look later tonight but I recall my friend saying their price at their shop was about the same if not a little more.

    Oxbow and T800H Thank this.
