Well I was getting 6.0 in my T600 MBN c15 pulling a dry van and reefer. I get 7.5 in a 2019 Cascadia with a Detroit pulling a reefer. In both trucks I run about 75 mph on the open road and if I'm in an urban area or construction zone do the speed limit. I never idle the Detroit. Idled the CAT as needed. Typically in the winter time the CAT would be closer to 5 mpg and this Detroit closer to 7 mpg. Over the course of the whole year both do a little better than that.
There's no way in the here and now with expensive fuel that's never going to be much cheaper that I'd buy a truck with a CAT engine to pull a reefer or dry van. Total waste of money blowing out the stacks is all that is. If you are a wonder driver who can manage 6.5 mpg out of a CAT in some sort of barn door truck it's guaranteed you can do 8 in a more efficient unit. This argument has been had in other threads. People want what they want and aren't usually swayed by logic. But logically the CAT is not your ecomical option. -
hopefully would find one already rebuilt. Looks like I can find some around 30-40k but then theres installation costs I guess. But wont an inframe on my current engine cost nearly 40k anyways. And I figure I spend about 4 grand a year on DEF and then I guarantee my EGR cooler is going to fail someday soon and DPF and SCR so I could be well over what it costs to drop in an old engine if I keep the one I have now. Idk its a hard decisionOxbow Thanks this.

Not really looking for optimal fuel economy I already gave up my chances of getting 7.5 mpg when I bought a 389 haha just want something decent and reliable

I’ve only driven an aero truck or anything with an emmisons motor a time or two
But I’m quite sure if I drove a new Crapcadia(which I won’t) I’d get substantially better fuel mileage than my old Pete....
But I’m either case driving habits will still determine the mileage I get
As for buying a used pre-emissions motor...IMHO I’d believe anything on market is junk and has to be overhauled
Too many pre emmision runnin trucks selling for unbelievably Stupid money....for me to believe anyone with a solid pre emmision motor without a home wouldn’t want way too much
But that’s just conjectureVampire, rollin coal, wore out and 2 others Thank this. -
Tough call. Idk what the answer is. But I still feel if people ignored oem and ran or tuned these emission Motors to operate at higher rpm, you would see less problems. Oh and change oil early and often.Oxbow and Josiah Harder Thank this.

What pre emmision motors are you looking at?

Was initially only looking for a 6NZ Cat or 3406 Cat but now im hearing good things about the Detroit series 60Vampire Thanks this.

I was just thinking about motor swap, custom brackets, custom harness, all that stuff to make the change. The whole project will cost so much money and time, that I don't think it's worth it.
Wonder if OP had thought about that‘Olhand and Josiah Harder Thank this. -
All new wiring too, I hadnt really thought too much about all those costs. I would also need to pay shipping costs to have it delivered. Hard for me to estimate all that cus I have no idea how hard it is to swap a motor
