I've had my cdl for two years I've been a oilfield driver since I got my cdl I've pretty much only pulled a tanker. With the oilfield in the shape it's in in and I want a change of scenery I've been planning a job swap to something I enjoy that also pays well I've got it narrowed down to fuel hauling or livestock hauling I've talked to some fuel haulers so I wanted to get on here and talk to some cattle haulers and weigh My options and make my choice
I've always wanted to haul cattle i just don't know how to get my foot in the door does anyone have any info on average company driver pay or any company that will hire a 22 going on 23 year old with no livestock hauling experience? Also if you are a livestock hauler do you enjoy it? How's home time? Any info or opinion would be appreciated

If you've really got your heart set on it, you can make it happen. But, it's gonna require a lot of work and sacrifice because your age and lack of experience are working against you.

If I were you, I'd try to go to work at a salebarn for a few years to get some experience handling cattle and make some contacts. Work hard and when you have a chance to load trucks, do it quietly and efficiently, and people will notice you.

As long as you keep a clean license and learn to handle cattle, your opportunity will come around with time. But, you've got to be around the right people that can help you make it happen. Granted, it will require some financial sacrifice, but a salebarn will give you all of those opportunities.

Most of the folks I know who do livestock hauling, were brought up around ranching and farms. Definitely doesn't seem like something you'd want to get into just for the money, sure it pays well though. I haul fuel myself, and it has never once tried to kick me, run me over, or refuse to do what I want it to. Never got to a destination and realized "yikes, I do declare, I gots me a dead compartment of fuel" Then have to worry about what to do with it

If this old bump on a log could get a hazmat end., don't see why anyone else couldn't. You're right though, neither are without their inherent risks

It sure ain't everyone's cup o tea. New regulations make it tougher every day. Lot of ex oil hands hookin pots and cutting rates. Takes alot of grit and to quote @wore out 'boy you'd better have porn star stamina'. But it can be done.

D o gs advice was pretty well said. Hometime will be the time you actually get to use the sleeper.

Theres a website, Livestocknetwork, that has classifieds. Best 'o Luck hand.

The only thing I know about the two,is that you'll never use a hot stick on a tanker. Just say'n....
