i,m sort of a wannabe i,ve been reading posts on this and another forum for about 3 months now. i came across some regulation that said something to the effect that if your driving and you come up to your 11th hour you are allowed a little extra time to pull off and park. maybe 1/2 hour or so. maybe only because of the weather. the experienced driver could shed some light on this.

you are NOT allowed to drive past the 11th hour. in adverse conditions such as weather... you are allowed an extra 2 hours to drive but only if you could have made your destination in your alloted time had those conditions didn't exist. in other words, you can't magically pull 2 extra hours out of a hat. it has to makes sense as to why and how far you drive in those 2 hours.

pull off somewhere and park under normal conditions. it's important to know how many hours you have at all times and plan accordingly. in reality, it isn't always easy to do this due to unforeseen circumstances. but you have to make every effort to keep yourself within your alloted hours. if it means staying put where you are.. so be it.

thankyou palerdr thats exactly what i was talking about i just couldnt remember what it said. i certainly dont know what its like out there on the road. i guess you get experience as you go, i,ve read where a guy unloads and the reciever says you cant park here you have to leave. i cant help but wonder if he has no driving hours left what he can do. ( and nowhere close by to park ) i would guess thats where preplanning comes in. i can only imagine the things you drivers have to do.

so i keep reading and learning to see if it something i can and want to do.

All though this may be some what of a true statement I feel that if a company wants me to run illegal and I am the one that gets in trouble for it then maybe I need to look elsewhere. I was told when I got MY DRIVERS LICENCES at the age of 16 that it is a PRIVLEDGE to have so don't screw it up. Because if needed the LAW can and will take them from me.

Now this CDL LICENCE is MINE not the company I work for so if they want me to jepordise what is MINE then I will not stay with them. I bet the company don't want someone working for them that steals hours from them. So why should I try and steal hours from DOT the LAW????

If I could drive my truck with the person that is telling me to do that with his/her CDL LICENCE then maybe I would cause they would be the one getting in trouble. OOHH!! but if that was the case then they would never ask you to do that in the first place now would they!!! So how can they expect you to do it if they wouldn't do it themselves. Now lets ask the owner of the company or VP of safty what they would do. Bottom line is I will look out for #1 first "ME" !!!!!!

Good luck finding companies who support you driving 100% legal. They're hard to find!!!!

They are out there you just have to know where to look. But you are right it is hard to find a company that is a 100% legal. Believe me it goes on in all companies but there are some companies who they know they can ask to do this.
And also know who not to ask and still treat them good. Your attitude and demeanor has a lot to do with a lot of things. Some companies expect you to run illegal all the time no questions asked, If not then they punish you.
But there are companies that understand why you won't and still give you good miles. The problem is not the company it's the person telling you to do it. Maybe I would look into changing dispatchers if possible. But I still feel that if they are forcing me and I refuse to and get punished for it then what do I have to lose, go up the ladder and inform proper personnel and leave.

It was very common at our company to refuse the occasional load. We gave two weeks notice. They tried to send us somewhere we NEVER go and neither does anyone else (to Nfld - the people who live there go there - there are a TON of Nfld drivers in that company).

    We refused. They fired us.

They did it on purpose 'cause they knew we'd refuse it.

Sure, we probably could have fought and won but Mike already had another job lined up (that's why we gave notice) and no way we were going to Newfoundland and maybe get stuck there, miss the start of the new job, lose two days' pay sitting on the ferry, take someone's ride home from them, etc., etc., etc.

Employers are scum 99% of the time. They don't give a #### about anyone or anything but themselves and their $$$$.

That 1% is HARD to find.

What is nice about this is you are able to go somewhere else and get a job fairly easy because your CDL is clean. If a person does something illegal because a dispatcher said they had to and gets caught you are in trouble with the LAW and the COMPANY. And the company will probably fire you after that anyway so what's the point.
But I'll say it again you are right they don't care!!!
