I believe it was a Connex 3300HP that I was using. I had asked another driver in the yard and he told me to put it on D if I wanted to be on citizens band. I was then able to use it to talk to the general population.

I'm thinking I may just stick with what I have. My Uniden has been flawless since I purchased new and had it peaked, tweaked with hot finals since 1995. I only recently had it back to the same tech for a new meter as it was sticking and the light would go out sometimes. He bench tested it while I was there and said everything was aligned and still on the money. Leave well enough alone I suppose.

As for the channel 50 remark,I have no idea what he meant by channel 50. He just told me that's where they all hang out. I'll just have to keep asking questions and besides, it seems like the older (if you consider 1995 old) radios seem to have a better reliability record anyways, and I really like my weather channels with alert feature.

It is not the same as operating an illegal radio on a public safety channel. The FCC will actuallly come after you for messing with the public safety. Where as they consider amature a pain in the butt run mostly by cry babies..

sideband is great if you have the time to tune the others in correctly and know how to use the "QSO" codes to talk. i changed my radio in the truck recently i put my galaxy 99 in my pickup and now i am running an older connex 3300 that has been MOSFET converted and tuned. the connex is an easier radio to find and i dont want my almost mint 99 to get beat to pieces in the truck.

If he told me channel 50, I would go to 10 channels above channel 40, or 27.525. (it helps if your 10 meter radio has freq. counter) Generally speaking my experience is the "sidebanders" go above channel 40, and AMers go below channel 1 when operating around the edges of the legal CB band. It works out pretty good that way.

It IS the same thing. BOTH are a licensed service--same as police, fire & rescue, or the gas company. If Amateur radio was considered a "pain" they would have done away with it. Talk on a public safety band, they'll come after you. Talk on the amateur band without a license, they'll come after you. The cops will complain to FCC (the users)---AND try to locate the offender. The Feds will "actually" come after you, too. The Amateurs will complain to FCC(the users) AND locate the offenders. That's how so many truckers were located 1999-2009, and they STILL get caught at it. CBers have the privilege of operating between 26.965 and 27.405---40 channels, the majority of which remain vacant from lack of use. But, oh no, people got's to yap where they have no business. There's no such THING as "extra" channels any more than there are police channels available for public use. Anybody can do what they like to do, but when they get CAUGHT, the story suddenly changes to "bu-bu-bu-but, Mr. FCC man, I wuzn't hurtin' nuttin' a-interferin' with dem hams!" :biggrin_25525: "I needs dem extra channels cuz I'm special since I bought this here reddio jist so's I kin talk on them 'funny' channels":biggrin_2559:

That'll be $11,000 made out to the US Treasury!!" :biggrin_25521:

REALLY - 11k for playing around with the funny channels and screwing with the old ham bittys . I really don't think it is reality is there a jail sentence to go with it also???? Nobody really could be that shook up or stupid to think it could happen like that . You hear about people hacking computer networks and not getting fines like that. ???????? and a bunch of really bad stuff. So there is 11K fine for playing on a cb ??????? and the moon is made of cheese .

Amateur radio operators are trained to do what is known as "fox hunting" where they use directional finding equipment to track down folks on an unauthorized frequency. That is how they were able to track down a couple of dump trucks operating on the non voice portion of the 10 meter band: http://www.arvideonews.com/otherstuff/Anatomy_of_an_Incursion.pdf

Actually, it's $10K. And yes, it can entail a year in prison.

47 USC § 501 provides for the penalty: "a fine of not more than $10,000 or by imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or both".

Much of the spectrum surrounding the CB band is used by the government. You know, the guys with big antennas, big black trucks, and big black guns. Just because you can't hear them using the frequency doesn't mean they aren't. Encrypted data usually just sounds like more noise in the background.

Scoff if you like, but keep in mind that the Feds are looking to collect every dollar they can...

LOL everything is going digital from law enforcement, rescue and the military. Don't let these hams fool you into believing that these "extra channels" are still being used by anyone but the whiny hams themselves.
