I don’t know about being bulletproof, I had a hard time with the SWR’s back then and the oil in the cartridge would leak.
EDIT:
That’s when I threw the Audio Kings in the trash and bought me the Wilson 2K back around 1988. Never looked back. Replace 1 stinger and bought the Extended 18” shaft. Now, that’s what you call “BULLETPROOF”.

I would have bought them from you. Because you could do maintenance on them. Unlike the wilson antenna, which is glued togetherDiesel Dave Thanks this.

How come when I look up that antenna, it has “Barjunk” written all over it ? Or is it a knock off ?
By the way, my Wilson 2K is one of the original ones. I know the later versions weren’t as stealth. -
wtf is an oil filled antenna
-
Unless you’re running a high power amplifier/linear……. No need for concern.

It's a CB antenna that has oil in the coil. It's basically the same antenna that Diesel Dave mentioned, the Audio Kings. The idea behind it is so that you can run more watts through the antenna, because the oil is suppose to keep the antenna cooler from the high RF power, and therefore it will perform better. Personally I believe it's kind of a snake oil sales pitch. Because I would think a big coil antenna would perform the same since it's air cooled instead of oil cooled.Powder Joints and Diesel Dave Thank this.

I had the same experience back in the day, though it was back in the 70's like 77 or 78. But it was a real POS then. Replaced it with a pair of 102" fiberglass antennas with sp-rings from Radio Shack, never had a SWR problem I can remember out of the whip, a few broke lights at Bob's Bigboy on Colorado thou.
Night Stalker10 Thanks this. -
Why?
because of two reasons, back in the day people would buy anything that made them feel special
and
the oil helps dissipate the heat created by the coil attenuating the power that reduces the radiating signal. -
It's a cheap antenna that is very customizable and durable.
