If you get into a truck never trust the color coding of the wiring. One poor mans meter is to bend the wire strands away leaving only one thin strand. Striking this quickly against something grounded such as the coax shield shell will produce a spark on the hot wire. The trick is using only one tiny strand which acts as a fuse in case you are slow in your motion. What you are trying to do is only make a fleeting contact to prevent blowing a fuse further on such as in the fuse box. The trick works well and is safe unless you are beyond clumsy. The advantage is rapidly determining the hot wire so you can hook up your power cord while never putting your radio at risk, all while you have no equipment with you to actually measure the power. Few drivers carry DVM's or even simple test lights with them so knowing this trick is a handy way to hook up your radio the right way on the first try.
mike5511, Thpbltblt and rollingradios Thank this. -
if the radio is cross wired it can be fixed in 5 min. All you have to do is open the radio, look in the area of where the ant,is and there is a diode there .Its called a reverse polarity diode. If you burnt it it will show signs of burning. The diode is black in color and should be the only one near the antenna.
