These are broker and shipper provided pilots. I don't have to pay for them so I don't really have any say here.
As far as mirrors, I called state patrol and the cleared it up for me.

Oh yes you do have a say. I don't care who pays for what, the driver is the one with his neck on the line.
I know you checked with HP, but like drivers, all HP and diesel bears are not equal. Be sure to read your permits for any information pertaining to any provisions. CYA is the name of the game.SidewaysBentHalo, Dye Guardian, johndeere4020 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yep what Six said.

@passingthru69 has seen it. Most of the scalemaster and diesel cops know nothing about OSOW. Hand them a permit and they hold it upside down...they can't even understand the permit. But then, there's that one Bear that does... Did his homework. Studied up on the regs and the provision sheet. And he's looking for that yellow and black banner to test his knowledge against yours. He can tell instantly whether or not you, the driver did your homework. "I don't know" is not an acceptable answer to him. He's like HeavyHammer with a badge. A driver's worst nightmare if he isn't on top of the game.
If you need a helping hand with permits, routing, provisions, pilot cars, whatever, just ask. Excellent group of guys in this forum. The more successful you and dad are, the more successful we all are.sawmill, Dye Guardian, MJ1657 and 5 others Thank this. -
I have run into MANY of those scale cops and diesel bears who know OSOW/OD and most of them will know within a few seconds of asking you the first question whether or not you read the permit. Used to be states required signatures in different ink colors to "prove" you read the permit. That failed because the first thing out of anyone's mouth was make sure you sign XXX in red or XXX in blue.
However if you know your stuff the inquisition will usually only last for the first question because they will have all the information they need based on your answer. Be a smart ### and you'll find out just how much you don't know but you will get schooled and that schooling will be expensive. -
What type of questions will they be asking? Stuff about the permit or oversize loads in general?
-
Depends on where you are at.
Louisiana- What time is sunset and where are you planning to stop?
Arizona- Do you know what the speed limit is?
Illinois- Do you have the latest provision sheet dated 2014?
Colorado- How many beacon lights do you have on the back of your trailer?
Tennessee- Do you have a 360 degree beacon light on the back?
Those are the easy ones. The ones that you really have to study up on are the ones that involve pilot cars. Examples:
State certification
Commercial insurance. Commercial use must be stated otherwise it is invalid.
Top signs. Pilot cats hate using them because they hurt their fuel economy. If youre new, an unscrupulous car will not tell you that he is required to put the sign on top.
Flags banner paddle stop signs and PPE gear. Required to be on.snowman_w900 and Dye Guardian Thank this. -
Not all states require them to have an overhead sign either, I know you didn't mean it that way six, but it kinda reads that way.
TripleSix Thanks this. -
Oh for the record IL . changed their provision sheet again this year 2016
See what happens to the guy who sits behind the desk now and doesn't haul oversize that much anymore lolTripleSix Thanks this. -
And OH Just published this: "The permittee is authorized to exit the permitted route at any State Highway intersection for food, fuel, rest, or repair provided that the hauler doesn’t travel more than 5,280 feet (1 mile) from the interchange."
And FYI, I'm also now sitting behind a desk..................at a reefer outfit to boot. But I still stay very much on top of OS/OW regulations because you never know what tomorrow will bring.Kujo, passingthru69, snowman_w900 and 3 others Thank this.
