Another option, if you want to save a little physical size and a few more confusing controls, is the 25 LX. Not much less, but way simpler for a n00b to learn to use, and unless you're an inveterate tweaker, you probably won't miss the extra features on the 29 LX. Both are great radios, IMHO, as well as the Uniden Bearcat 880 (might as well skip the single sideband mode until you're more used to AM and basic operations, and save around $40 over the 980.
