there are too many people out there in cb land that use there export(high watt) cb radio to talk over everyone, tell people how if they don't have a high watt cb to park there rig and never use it again and just piss people off. so yeah i don't like people that use export radios for general #### chat

Sounds like a personal problem. Maybe several years of intensive therapy for you and gadfly might show you the error of you ways. You with your total control issues and gagfly with his demeaning and condescending attitude towards cber's. There's medication that can help you both. And we're all pulling for you and your families that the both of you get better soon. :biggrin_25519:

Im not a ham and have no plans to become one! I just dont understand why people get their radios setup to talk to the moon when they only talk to people no more than a mile or 2 away

Very seldom do I talk to other drivers for our company and they are only a mile or two away.

Most convos take place over a 15 plus mile range at minimum.

See that is the thing about North Dakota. We don't have many trucks running bumper to bumper here.

Sometimes we have to have bigger radios just to get over the bleeding splatter boxes that people purchase from places on the internet or that were hacked up by some backroom truckstop tech.

Just a week ago, I ran into this. Some guy had a done up super hack packed Galaxy and he was splattering all over the place. He was on 19 and we were down to 12 and he was still splattering.

he sounded like poop on 19 and sounded just as bad on 12 although he was a bit lower on the meter. I did not have a problem stomping him on 19 with a Stealth Cobra 29 but some of our drivers don't run high end rigs and were having problems getting over him.

    Gadfly,
your info on hams and cb's are very useful, as is that of the other truckers on here. I am looking into my ham liscense because I have a connex 3300 hp and if im not mistaken, there is some grey area there about its legal usage and I really want my ham liscense anyway....but perhaps some of you "experts" on here are being padantic...not an admirable trait...keep up the good info...

Rat, you do realize you can communicate over 1000 miles on 1/2 watt?

NO, none of the "I jist-gotta-have-them-gre't-big-'bird'-watts" WILL ever likely understand the principles and theories of RF. In the world of CB radio, the world of non-technical, often non-knowing, where breaking of the law is often celebrated as some kind of wonderful trait, it is WATTS, WATTS, WATTS, WATTS. MO' POWAH, MO' POWAH! 'AH'M THIS H'YAR BIG REDDIO MAN, AN' AH JIST GOT DOWN"!!!!:biggrin_2559: WHO cares if you just got down, got up,or went to take a dump? :biggrin_255: And, ooooooooooo, would they ever be disappointed if they knew exactly how LITTLE "watts" has to do with it----------IF the users knows how and when to use it at all. "If you double your power, you 'double' your distance". How disappointed, too, they'd be if they actually KNEW that it takes 4 times a given power to RAISE the RECEIVED signal ONE S-unit--which is the actual level it takes for the human ear to detect a difference!!!! CBers can't understand that they create their OWN problems with their ILLEGAL amplifiers, and the noise they hear is caused by their own actions! They
THINK that MO' POWAH is the answer. The more people that increase their power, the MORE the noise, they go UP again, the noise goes up, and the vicious cycle just worsens. Then, of course, there's those who use BEEG LEENYARS because they lack certain physical or deductive powers and they must make up for it by thinking they are the "BIG man" on the block!:biggrin_2559:. It is the VERY reason that more than 4 watts IS illegal because:

    1. CBers are, mostly, NON-TECHNICAL and do not have a clue about what there are doing. That is not a put-down; it is a simple FACT.

    2. The Feds (FCC) and the Field Engineers that made the rules KNOW that
more power only makes things WORSE, not better>

    3. They will NOT permit a hobby service to compete with Amateur Radio.

    4. There are OTHER users of 27 MHZ, and CBers interfere with THEM badly as is.

IF you want to get an education by books AND by doing, take the Amateur Exam. Take the Technicial test and "cut your teeth" on 2, 6, and 10 Meters. Learn WHY and HOW to use power. Learn how "PROPAGATION" works, how to use "maximum usable frequency" (called MUF) to determine which is the best frequency to use. Chuck the "channel" this and "channel that". IF you are willing to ABIDE by the rules, you will get a vast number of bands and frequencies. There is no NEED to be a rule-breaker because the return (just plain FUN) is so great. Just leave the CB "culture" behind when on amateur radio; forget the "cutesy" sayings and lingo (I just got down, treetop tall, etc). Use plain language while on the air (just like you would on the telephone).

You will have more FUN, more "company" in your truck than you can imagine!

Most CB radio enthusiasts know this, I don't know about truck drivers but I'd be willing to bet the majority of them don't. In fact as I have learned, a lot of truck drivers really don't know much at all about a CB other than how to key up and talk. (well some don't know how to do that :biggrin_25521:) But the sad part is because most truckers don't understand the workings of a CB they are often "sold" bull by CB techs at truck stops and such who take advantage of their ignorance.

That's why I believe so many truckers feel they "need" to have Bubba Joe at Hack N #### CB shop crank up the watts or put on a linear. Because they were fed the line of "I can make your radio talk 10 more miles by cranking up the watts from 4 to 20". Also because I believe some truckers try to "outdo" each other and ensure they have the biggest radio "just in case" they have to talk over the bozo at the truck stop who won't shut up about "not having any panties on" or some #### like that.

Also take into consideration when skips rolls heavy, it's hard sometimes to get out.

My advice to any trucker, is learn how to get the best antenna and coax your money can buy, then learn how to tune it for the lowest SWR possible, then drop in nothing less than a Cobra 25 or a Uniden 68...bought from Sparkys CB shack. Do all of this and you'll have a radio that will last for years. Oh and if you want to run echo, learn how to set it up right so you don't sound like ####. Yes too much echo is bad, no one understands you and you're just a nuissance taking up the airwaves.
