Hood's Truck Stop on I-44 at exit 60 or 61? in MO has a good inventory and often will sell you used stuff at a good price if he has any.

61, and I don't recall seeing any 6 or 7 foot antennas there when I had him fix one of my mics.

Ok, here is my route thru Sunday. Pick up in Augusta, WI first thing in the morning then heading for Ottawa, KS by Saturday morning. May possibly stop for the night in Des Moines. Not sure yet. From Ottawa, I'm going to Springfield, MO and then up to Morris, IL by Sunday. Any good shops along this route?

The one I told you above is just west of Springfield a few miles on I-44....He used to be closed on Sunday and Monday though. 417-732-7070. (If he is busy he won't answer the phone) I haven't been up there in awhile so I'm not sure of his hours anymore. Jim's a good guy and is second generation in radio repair. His old man used to take care of the State Police radios in MO and Jim learned from him. He should be on the white list, but he isn't computer savvy. He has been in the business for 30 years at least that I know of.....all in the same area. The tech I use is better, but Jim is who I went to before I met Russ.

Well, I was able to briefly stop at Hood's late saturday. When I got there, he was working on one guys radio and there was another driver waiting his turn next. I waited for a while, until he finished with the radio and was getting ready to go out to the truck to check the drivers swr's and he asked me what I needed. I told him some of what y'all have said and he said I should be fine with a 5 foot antenna and no less tan a 12 foot cable. Started talking about sine waves and my eyes just kind of glazed over. Lol. Anyway, I needed to get to Springfield to pick up my load by 1800 and told him I would try to make it back by the time he closed. Yeah, that didn't happen. What was supposed to be a preloaded trailer turned into a two hour wait while they loaded the trailer that was already in the dock. So I wasn't able to return, but I think I do have a solid plan now. Just need to get all the pieces and be able to get to a shop somewhere. Don't really get down to Springfield very often.
Thanks for all your help. I will keep you posted. -
I can get by with my 5ft SkipShooter, but it doesn't matter what length coax I use on my 7ft. That tells me it is more efficient and the better option. I just say that so you know while the 5ft may work, there are better options and your performance will improve with the 7ft.

Im setting up a new 102 whip with my reciever and i went to connect the UHF Pl-259 cable, which hooks up to my reciever, to whip, only to discover that the whip has a different hookup.
Protruding from the bottom of it is a female Pl-259 LOOOKING connector, however it is about a half cm smaller in diameter. Also the middle peg from 259 cable doesnt fit in the middle slot on the whips hookup. Its a bit smaller and it had a screw in it. Im sure to anchor a cable of some sort.
What is this connection called and how can i hook it up to my 259 cable?
thanks, nate -
Cut the end off your coax and strip it back. The center conductor goes to the large screw on the mount and the braid is connected to the smaller screw. I'd solder them.

I've always done what The Gryphon said do. I picture of what you are talking about would be helpful.

Its all hooked up. I got a little bit of traffic when i was testing it before i mounted.
Now no traffic on any channel.
thanks,
Nate
