Hello: You were all so helpful when I asked about an antenna issue. I followed the tuning instructions I reviewed on YOU TUBE. I have a TRAM 300 antenna and a Cobra 29 LTD Classic.
I was able to get a SWR of 1.5 on Channel 19. The SWR was a little lower on Channel 40 after the tuning. I was able to transmit and receive about 4 miles with clear communication. But when I continue to tune antenna to get the SWR below 1.5, I see a continuous RED light showing up on the "ANT" light. And when I retune the antenna to the 1.5 SWR, the RED light goes away or I just have a slight blinking of the RED light or no Red light at all at the 1.5 SWR when transmitting.
QUESTIONS
1. What does it mean when I see a slight blink or continuous red light showing up on the
"ANT" light?
2. Can I get the SWR down below 1.5 and not have the RED light show up on the "ANT"
light. How to do this?
3. Is it a problem to see that RED light on the "ANT" light indicator?
Thank you again. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Best thing is to have an inline swr meter. @rabbiporkchop has a diagram to check resistance as well.

The ANT light indicates a SWR of 3.0:1 or greater.
Are you sure you are re-calibrating the meter for every channel you are checking the SWR on? If not those readings will not be correct.
1.5:1 is fine. you will unlikely ever get it down to 1:1 and 1.5:1 may be about as low as you can get it for your particular installation.
The fact that you had the SWR lower on channel 40 than channel 19 indicates that the length is a little to short. What were you getting on channel 1? -
Are you using an external SWR meter?, or the internal SWR meter in the radio?
-
Thanks for your comments on my behalf. I do not have an external SWR meter. So I tuned my antenna following instructions in my user manual and those found on YOU TUBE and my internal SWR meter. My SWR reading on Channel 1 is 2.0 and no Red light above the “ANT”...and 1.7 on Channel 40 with a RED light above the “ANT”.
After tuning the antenna, I am able to see a SWR on channels 1-10 at a little over 1.5. When I key my microphone to transmit, I notice that the indicator light above the “ANT” is not RED. Please note also that the SWR meter needle indicator stays at around 1.5 when I key microphone and transmit on channels 1-10. But when I choose channels 11-40 and key the microphone, I notice that my RX/TX light indicator turns RED and that the indicator light above the “ANT” also turns RED. Please note also that the SWR meter needle indicator does not move to above 3.0 and is at about or a little below 1.5 when I transmit on channels 11-40.
It is my understanding that if the “ANT” light comes on than I am transmitting at a high 3.0 SWR which will damage my cb radio. But my SWR meter needle does not get close to 3.0 when I key the microphone to transmit on channels 11-40.
Also, when I transmit, should the RED light for "ANT" ever come on or is this normal and I will not damage my CB?
I have spent some time tuning by moving the antenna up or down to eliminate the Red light coming on when transmitting above channels 11-40 but with no success. What am I doing wrong or am I ok. What can I do, if anything, to tune my antenna to achieve a low SWR on channels 1-40 without the RED light coming on above the letter "ANT"?
I am not sure if that RED light coming on when I key the microphone for channels 11-40 is a problem or not.
I am doing my best to explain my issue. If anyone can shed some light on this dilemma, I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,

You may have a defective radio as the ANT light should not come on unless you have a SWR close or over 3.0:1.
An external SWR meter would help to confirm the actual SWR but the radio will go by what it thinks the SWR is when displaying the ANT light so this is not making much sense.
The ANT light being on is a huge problem if you want transmit. It is basically telling you that the radio is folding back the power to protect itself from a high SWR. It is not clear why it would be doing so while showing a lower SWR reading unless you are not doing the calibration for each channel before checking the SWR on it or the radio is defective.
The higher the frequency (channel), the shorter the antenna needs to be to get a good match. -
If your SWR on channel 1 is higher than channel 40, then your antenna is too short, and needs a longer stinger...
One other thing that can cause this, is where you have the antenna mounted...(you didn't say)
"IDEAL LOCATION" is to have it mounted on the roof...
Where is yours located? -
It is also possible the antenna light is slightly out of adjustment.

The real problem is that he’s not using an external SWR meter. The so called internal SWR meter in the Cobra 29’s are very inaccurate.
In fact I dealt with this problem yesterday. My co-worker said his new Cobra 29 wasn’t working very good. He told me the mechanic replaced the co-phase antennas and coax. I informed him that new antennas need to be matched to the radio. I checked it out with my external SWR meter. It said the SWR was 2.5 on channel 40. The internal SWR meter in the radio said the SWR was 1.2 on channel 40. Big difference, and yes the antenna error lite was on. Unfortunately a lot of people are wasting their money if they are buying the 29’s for that feature.Last edited: Jan 16, 2020
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I would buy an external SWR meter for 20 bucks or so and use it to tune the antenna. Problem solved. It will be useful many times over the years.
Timin770 Thanks this.
