What do y'all recommend for an all around good radio for use as a base station at my house? Something reliable but not costing an arm and a leg...

For a base unit only? Are you thinking sideband or just CB?

And also are you wanting an actual base station? Or are you looking for a mobile that you can use as a base?

It also would be important to ask how much you want to spend? You can have a awesome base station with a Cobra 29 hooked up to a power supply. Run that thru a good antenna mounted at the appropriate height, might want to get something better than the stock mic too, and you will sound as good as the most expensive radio out there.

There's honestly not a base station that won't "cost a arm and a leg"

For the most part this is partially true, depending on what base station you get. Something like a Cobra 2000, or a Tram D-201/D-201A, Browning Golden Eagle....yes you will pay dearly as collectors horde these radios like the family jewels. Other base radios can be had for cheap, if not sometimes free.

EZ money posted a link to a Uniden Washington. I used to have one of those and I reluctantly sold it....yes those are good radios. Expect to pay anywhere from $60 on up to $200 for one, depending on it's condition.

Cornfield, if it were up to me, I'd say run nothing except a SSB radio. That way you can work skip and such not only on AM but on SSB as well, and then you can still talk to all your trucking buddies on 19 AM. Big question is are you wanting a base unit only, or would you settle for a mobile set up as a base with a good power supply and maybe either a home-brew antenna or a typical omni-directional fiberglass stick (Imax 2000, Antron 99, Shakespeare Big Stick)?

I already have an Antron up. Does the 29's have Ssb? If not, I also like galaxy mobile radios.

No...the Cobra 29's are all AM only radios. SSB radios are Cobra 148 GTL, Uniden Grant, Cobra 140, Galaxy 949, Galaxy 959, Galaxy 979, the new Uniden 980, Uniden PC 122, Uniden PC 244.....all of these are mobile SSB radios. But they can be made into a base if you can provide a power supply.

Base SSB radios...Cobra 2000, Cobra 142, Cobra 139XLR, Uniden Washington, Galaxy 2517....just to name a few...again though these are expensive radios, mainly due to the collectors driving up the prices, so prepare to pay. (might be cheaper just doing a mobile as a base)

Now keep in mind a SSB is not mandatory for a base....if you just wanted to run AM only a Cobra 29 would work....but if you're wanting to spend a little extra time talking to folks in areas where it's not so noisy and you can really utilize your transmitters power, SSB is the way to go.

    My 2 cents.
