Just because the night watcher stops working, doesn't mean the radio will not work.
I have a cobra 29ltd nwst, and I don't have any complaints with it. Everybody hears me just fine, and unfortunately, I hear some people I would rather not hear. But, thank goodness for a volume knob, huh?

The echo boards and roger beeps are for the amusement of the person that has the radio with those items built in. Everybody else complains about somebody that has too much echo, or uses the blasted beep.

I didn't say the radio itself would quit working. Yes it will work but the face will not, and when it doesn't it costs almost as much as the radio to fix....so IMO you might as well save your cash or if you really need a backlit radio buy a Uniden model that uses several LED's and not just one for the face plate.

I have heard some claim a "touch" of echo does help you get heard a little better than without...but some people overdo it and make it diffcult to understand. The roger beep is said to be really for SSB as there's no way of knowing when the other party has unkeyed since there's no carrier on SSB. But yes also to annoy the crap out of some for the operator's amusement.
