yeah he matched the midnight 250 with the cobra 29...The midnight gets warm pretty quick...Im thinkin the radio need a proper set up/tune and a bigger power/gnd supply wire..Dont wanna send it out to mark cause he dont wanna work on them and doesnt wanna take a case off an amp..

Ive worked on these things for 30 years, and here are some facts.
1 To make it, you got to be where the trucks are. those areas charge big bucks rent, and you have high overhead, and yes, you are tempted to cheat a bit just to make it. thats a fact
    .
2 Some people install their shop in a mobile, camper, or box truck to keep overhead down and survive and its a great theft deterrent .. Truckers are not known for being super generous with their money,(they can'y afford it, neither can I) but are rather frugal. Its not what the guy is in, Conversely its his knowledge and understanding. Have you walked in a nice well stocked shop? well your are going to pay extra for the privilege. You cant expect them to fix your radio for 10-20 bucks and pull a half million dollar shop and inventory out of their ###. You would be surprised at the good service and better prices at some mobile shops of you will just keep and open mind. Ive found that truckers don't care if you are under a patio umbrella as long as you give them good service. The more you truckers support your tech, the more he/she can afford to improve themselves and give you a better selection, its simple economics, So rather than criticize, why not hep them up a few rungs on the ladder? they benefit, and you will too!

3 Their are no "magic silver bullet" AKA super mods, wack packs, connex boards, that will make the unit perform 1000 miles. The most important part of a CB station is A PROPERLY MATCHED ANTENNA SYSTEM time must be taken to properly set up a station, every one is different, and have to be" dialed in " muck like a winning race car.

4 The dirty secret is, Lets just say your radio talks good....take it to the shop anyway(most of them).....guess if they will find something wrong with it anyway...many of the guys are hurting, and survive month to month.

5 Oscilloscopes have their place for signal tracing, troubleshooting and indicating flat-topping. If the tech doesn't totally disable the AMC this is an non issue. and yes, a passable job can be done without one. you don't need a light show on the bench when you key the mike. most of this is just a "WOW" factor, easy to fall for, but usually totally erroneous unless the tech is troubleshooting or aligning an oscillator. Besides, the people who know how to read a scope, should know enough about electronics to do their own work, and certainly have no need for a CB shop.

6 A CB radio station is like a good music band. everything must work together, from the microphone to the tip of the antenna.....so if the tech works on your radio, or you buy a $400 radio, it's not going to talk worth a #### if you have factory coax and high swr......the Antenna is really, more important than the choice of radio. An old Cobra 25 with an good antenna will talk and hear rings around a super-duper connex with a bad antenna system. Don't bash the tech if you cheap out on your antenna system. And if the antenna system is bad enough, it can damage your radio.

7 As far as the "warfare" between shops goes, all that "one up,,manship" between them does is cut everyone's throat in the business(ever hear of united we stand shop owners)??.I probably piss off enough people to keep another shop busy. I go on record, stating, as long as that driver leaves that shop happy with the way his radio talks and hears, and sounds good to others, and he feels that he got SOMETHING for his money, The method used, or what the shop is in, does not matter in the least. Two shops fighting, in my opinion, causes the truckers not to want to stop at neither, so BOTH looses.

8 A good shop also takes time to make sure the receive is as good as possible. its easy to make a radio do more wattage, but what good is it if you cant hear the other guy?

9 And then there is the lowballer/blackmailer. This is the chap that tries to be your buddy, in the hopes he will get CB gear for cheap .When he figures out the shop isn't going to do that, then that shop is now a "crook" "hack" blah, blah blah.

I remember when I had a shop in Kentucky, I bought several new Cobra 148F radios. My markup was $50, plus if the buyer wanted a peak out Id do it for free. I heard a Local on another channel say "Im not paying that SOB 50 more dollars, I KNOW where he got it, and il ljust drive up there and buy one!(coppers electronics of Louisville) 137 miles one way. And so he did. brought it home hooked it up and bragged, until someone asked him "what did you spend on the trip"? when he eventually asked me to modify it, I laughed at him. so some other locals came to his rescue. I dont think it worked again after that. I can guarantee he will still tell people my shop is trash, despite the fact he brought the situation on himself.

They call me Hillbilly, in Joplin Mo. and yes I'm mobile. Ive found I make more profit like that and theft of new radios has went to Zero. and yes I will make mistakes. I can tell you being a CB tech puts a target on your back as if you were Bin Laden. the other shops are gunning for you, Some folks want to jew you down to $10 for a three hour repair, and if it dont work flawlessly for the next 10 years, you're a hack or worse. I have yet to know of anyone who has gotten wealthy working on CB radio. as far as the "bad" shops goes, the free marked always weeds them out,

Some drivers think Im great as a shirt pocket, and some think I'm lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rut. thats just life. all of us try to survive. May tech's on the web claim to be the :"best" I dont make that claim. Im not the best, because I lean something new every day. but im not the worst either, I just do the best I can, and hope for the best ;)

Is this the same shop that used to be at exit 33 behind the Hungry House Cafe?

If they can't make a radio sound like this, chances are pretty good you are getting ripped off.
