There is no way I could possibly sleep with a permit driver driving!! I would not put my life in the hands of someone inexperienced driving 80,000 lbs down the highway!

You can log line 4 24/7/365 and not violate anything besides your biological clock.

True. But in the example he gave above, the CDL driver drives for 11 hours and then goes on line 4 while the permit driver drives. That is on duty/not driving. So legally, since he has driven for 11, if he stays on line 4 the 11 hours that his permit driver is driving, that will put him at 22 hours with no break. At some point, preferably after 14 hours (even though he can work more but can not drive) he has to take a 10 hour DOT break before he can drive again. It seemed like he was wanting to "team" with a permit driver and you can't do that the way the HOS are written.

You don't run a team operation with a permit holder. Legally that isn't possible.

Exactly! That is the point I was making since he asked about being in sleeper berth with a permit driver driving.

My example would be legal cdl holder drives 11 hours he can now no longer drive but can be on duty so he goes to on duty while the permit holder drives that's 22 hours driving in a day then they take a 10 hour break and do it again. It is legal but would run the cdl holders 70 hour clock out in 3 days. Also the cdl holder must be awake and alert while the permit holder drives and I doubt after driving 11 hours anyone could sit in the jump seat and stay awake. In short it is legal just not advisable

My first driving job was with a farmer/rancher for 5 years. Harvest was murder. After school, I drove 3 trips from Fort Wayne to Gary. After the 3rd trip, I operated a combine and backhoe to load the hoppers until it was time to go to school again. Granted I was 15 at the time, but in many instances I went 2 days non stop.

Actually the truck would only be able to drive 13 1/2 hours in your example. If permit driver drove 11 hours he'd actually have 11 1/2 hours logged because of his 30 minute break. CDL driver would also have a 30 minute break logged leaving him with 2 1/2 hours left to drive. Gotta have a half hour break!

I would never be in a truck with a permit driver behind the wheel to begin with. Haha. I don't know how those people do it!

not illegal. CDL holder simply cannot drive again until a 10 hr rest period has been taken.
