I'm about to go to school for the second time to get my cdl. Like a dummy I let it go in 2007. I drove for 5 years untill jan. 2006. My question is.. does anyone know how long I will have to go out with a trainer? My recruiter is telling me 6weeks cause I let my cdl go. I told him just because I let it go doesnt mean I lost all knowledge of driving. Any ideas would be great.

It's not your recruiter that is telling you that, it's his insurance telling HIM that. No experience w/in the last 5 years = start over.

There are companies like Watkins Shepard that will cut you loose after a 10 day orientation. There are probably local companies that would do the same.

You have to list driving experience going back 10 years, so your experience will count. Just not as recent experience. That should be appealing to many companies.

What kind of driving are you looking to do? OTR? Local? Living in Texas I would think your best bet would be the oilfields. I guess that is still lots of training, but different then the otr teaming driver/mentor model that fails so often.

I would like to raise my standards, but since i havent driven in 5 years going on 6 my options are pretty slim. I'm hoping my trainer realizes what I'm capable of and cuts me loose. In a perfect world that would probably happen but in the world of trucking nothing goes our way, atleast not the way we want and when we want it.

Oh, how much of a pain in the butt is the electronic logbook? I'm not looking forward to that at all.

My guess is if you have retained any of your skills the trainer will want to keep you on the truck the whole time. --Why cut you loose early when he will just be back to the "luck of the draw" and may end up with a total noob needing constant hand holding.
