Just learn the road rules dude and you will pass the test alot of driving test questions are simple common sense stuff the questions are multi choice anyway and i always pick the answer that makes the most sense i took a test 2 years back didn't do any study at all and passed first time why? cause its all just about practical knowledge although having been driving for over 36 years does help

Yes the paper manuals in MS are $2. And I'll be honest. I read the manual 2 times and if I hadn't done practice test here I wouldn't have passed it. You can however download it for free off the dmv website.

It was kind of tricky to find the kentucky official DMV website.

I was reading over the cdl information.
One question, in their wording they mention taking a test for a permit and they mention taking a "Skills Test". Is that part of the driving test?

This is the part that confuses me,
    • At the time of issuance of a CDL permit requiring a skills test, a driver who has held a Kentucky operator license for 30 days or longer will pay a skills testing fee of fifty dollars ($50) in addition to the eleven dollar ($11) CDL permit fee.

If anyone cares to look at the site, here is the link

I've gotten manuals from a handful of different states over the years, never been charged. Their usually on the front counter to grab.

Yes. There is a written test, after which you get the Permit. And then (usually after school) you have to take a skills test for the CDL. Which includes a pre-trip inspection, a manuevers test and a driving test.

Do yourself a big favor and go check this program out. It covers everything you need to know for all CDL tests in every state and I can say by personal experience that it is a great program. It's free, it's loaded with information and the way that you progress through the program it cements the knowledge and you will remember it. Seriously give it a try.

Don't jump around, go from start to finish. You can skip the hazmat, doubles and triples and passengers stuff if you want at first, it's not required to get your permit and be done later after you get your CDL. Most schools don't require anything more that a class A CDL (general knowledge, air brakes, and combo vehicles) permit.

As far as the skills test is concerned,

looking closely at the ky.gov web page I found this statement-

"What does the road test cover?
Drivers will be required to take this test in the class of vehicle they intend to drive. The test includes a pre-trip inspection, off-road maneuvering, and on-road driving test. The applicant will be required to furnish a vehicle for testing.
After the CDL permit is issued, applicants must wait 14 days before the skill test is administered. Applicants must call Kentcky State Police to schedule a skill test appointment. If you passed the written test for air brakes, you will need to skills test in an air brake vehicle, otherwise, you will receive an L restriction."

So it looks to me like it's all in the wording, and in this case KY is a little confusing. The rest of the page makes it sound as if there is a skills test with the permit written test, and that would not be consistent with other states. But here in the above paragraph it seems to straighten itself out and looks as if KY is just like most all other states, there is a written exam for the permit followed but a minimum 14 period before a skills test can be taken by the permitted person. That falls in line with the other states.
