I think that we as truck drivers get screwed enough. Everything we do is mandated by the Federal Goverment, so does anyone else believe that we should just have a Federal CDL and not have to do this state to state BS. I transfered mine to SC from PA, wasn't a big deal, just more money to shell out for an already good CDL. The only test I had to redo was the Hazmat.

I have a similar question. If you are transferring an out of state CDL to a California one does the CA DMV make you take the written, pre-trip, and road tests like IL?
-
CA has a website just for those types of questions.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/home/dmv.htm
In MN I had to take the Class D written test, and hazmat if you want that endorsement.
No driving or skills retake.
But many states are different.
Don't ask here - ask of the state you want the transfer done in.
First hand information is so much better than second hand opinions. -
I'm surprised you didn't get 15 different answers. My experiences with CA DMV was nothing short of excruciating...
-
My question was directed at people who live in California as they should know. Just like I know the IL rules. And for your information I looked at the CA site and could not find my answer.

Try this:
http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/apply-cdl.php
Scroll down to "Out-of-State Licenses" It doesn't really answer your question, I know, but there is at least a phone number; expect to be on hold for a long time or for them to ask you to leave a call-back number and then not call you back.
Keep in mind what Lepton 1 said: dealing with California's DMV is excruciating. I'll attest to that--I live here. I vaguely recall that you now have to take a road test to transfer your CDL; not sure. And probably, if you were to call DMV twice, you'd get two different answers. -
Interesting. When I called Texas, they said I had to basically take all the written tests for my endorsements and the written CDL test as well. I didn't have to do a riding test. But I would have to do the TSA BS again, and then redo it when I get my TWIC card. But I swear that the second time I called, they reversed some of the requirments lol
ac120 Thanks this. -
Wouldn't surprise me as in IL it's the same thing. Used to be if you had an out of state CDL you only had to take the written test to obtain your IL one but of course all good things have to be done away with.
ac120 Thanks this. -
I can tell you Ca. does not require any testing to transfer your CDL into Ca. However, the clerk can require you to take a written test, if he/she thinks you need one. Actually, they can require you to completely re-test, but that would be reserved for an applicant with a terrible driving record. Everyone takes the eye exam. A normal regular person with a normal driving record will have no problem transferring.
