I have had Verizon cell phone service for years, but never did the data/smart phone package. I am getting ready to start going over the road again and I was wanting some advice and suggestions on what to buy and how much data memory would I need.

I know nothing about the data pkg or smart phones, the one I have now is just plain jane and ready for a new one.

    Thanks

I use the droid X2 and it's done pretty well. It comes with an 8gb memory card and the data package is $30 a month on top of the bill. As long as you don't put it in a ziplock bag and try to film underwater while drunkenly floating down the river, it'll do fine. Mine's kinda funny now.

Dude. That just made my day. :biggrin_25523:

I have been accused more than once of drunken-engineering in my time. But it never crossed my mind that a good ziploc may turn my Droid into an underwater cam.

Now? Now I have the uncontrollable compulsion to try to improve on your original results and try it.

Sorry for the thread-drift RTR. On your question, I am a also a major fan of either a Droid or an iPhone with Verizon and one of the data plans for OTR. If you want internet on a laptop too (in addition to just on the phone itself) then get the phone with mobile hotspot capability and add that too. It does it all in one device. The days of the $30 "unlimited" plans are suspended (at least for the time-being) because of tethering abuse and so many users on the networks now until they expand them more again. But current users are grandfathered. Sprint has an "unlimited" data plan for $80/month right now until Jan 12th, but it has restrictions too (i.e. games, ringers, songs, and some video channels do NOT count and could result in additional charges.)

You did not mention WHAT you will be "surfing" with it out there, so how MUCH data on your plan depends widely on that answer.

I don't do songs or stuff like that, it would mainly be checking my email and surfing the web when I am out on the road, and checking load boards.

On the phone, or on a computer too?

I would get the iPhone 4S or iPhone 4. With the 4S you can dictate and speak to siri and she can communicate back with you. There are apps to download to give you the cheapest diesel in a given city, a place to store reminders, addresses, etc. etc.

There are endless apps for trucking and all very good. And you can download podcasts and live streams of your favorite radio programs and kiss the satellite radio goodbye. Welcome to the last phone you'll ever want to own. People can keep their droids. I'll stay with apple and their phones from here on out, regardless of what some say about how much better droid is.

It didn't quite turn out as cool as I thought it would at the time and I wouldn't call it a "good" ziplock as it failed in the end. I'll have to try and upload the second half of that sometime. It's a bit more entertaining.

If you plan on having your phone double as a GPS, look at one with a good screen. One of the main things I like about my thunderbolt, besides the 4g and talk/data at the same time, is the 4.3" screen. My wife has the iPhone, and it's 3.5" screen is just too small. A for voice commands, android had that long before Apple. My wife misses being able to speak a text message. The only two things that I am envious about is battery life and the camera.
For a noob, the iPhone is simple and just works. The downside is you are stuck in iTunes store without jailbreaking.

I was thinking about using the VZ Navigatior as the GPS system and road map. I have spoken with a couple of people and they like this and said it stays up to date.

I will check out the droids and see what they have. Appreciate the advice about the screen size, didn't think about that.
