I have a love hate relationship with cell phones and the current technology. I love the idea of my cell phone being able to be a micro computer and I can use it as one when sitting and waiting someplace. I hate that cell phones have this technology when people are using it while driving down the road.
There is no real cure for cell phone use while in a moving vehicle. You can have them shut down but then passengers will be in an uproar because they think they need to be "connected" at all times.
Cell phone use is quickly becoming ,if not already, the #1 danger on the road to everyone.

I just remembered a day not all too long ago. Was rolling east on MN highway 10. There was a truck coming up behind me. All of a sudden he decided to pull out and pass. Well there was a little red car in the hammer lane passing him. The car shot down the median but thankfully the person never lost control of the car and made it back on the road but just missed a road sign. As the guy in the truck got next to me I noticed he had his phone stuck to his head. Apparently the phone convo was too important to him to even look in his mirrors etc. It was a end dump gravel puller with no radio so I could not raise the idiot. Oh well like usual I just pushed the button on my BT and said "Dial 911" and I reported the fool and his location along with company name on the truck which was Strata and what the fool did and was doing. Just like I do everytime I seen an idiot swerving about yaking on his phone no matter if the idiot is using a BT or not.
The great thing about cell phones and the current cell services is that most all offer a free voice mail service. If there is any traffic then my cell calls all go to voice mail then I find a spot to get out of the way and call back.
I don't care what some of you say but the truth of the matter is that the brain does not multi task. It has never done it and still can't do it. Tests have proven this with many walks of life. Even people that talk on the phone all day long and try to do other tasks, have reduced productivity when they are talking on a phone. Reaction times are reduced significantly when talking on the phone. -
So you didn't pull over and stop before making the phone call (nor, apparently, all the other times you have made such calls)? Hypocrite.

There were 3 vehicles on that short stretch of road and that included myself. Just like any time I actually use the phone without pulling over. Little to no traffic then I will use it sparingly. Got to remember I live in ND and run around this area and a little ways into Minnesota. All rural areas with hardly any traffic. Not like the big cities etc.

If in traffic, my cell goes to voicemail till traffic lets up or I can find a place to get out of the way. If it is just someone or the wife wanting to chat then it can wait till I am done working. If the boss calls me then it is usually a change in load point or a cancelation. If the wife calls me multiple times then I know that I have to call her back asap because something has happened at home. It is our code that I have to call back ASAP. If she is just looking to chat and it is not important then she just calls once and leaves a message. -
The cell phone ban is a huge hit to our 1st amendment right! When law enforcement sets up a crack down it will for sure open up some new jobs in truck driving!!! I hope OOIDA is fighting to repeal this great loss of freedom of American Truck Drivers!
