While I agree that no one needs to text and drive, and that handsfree is better, I am really getting annoyed about the govt, and these companies trying to micromanage everyone's life. Enough is enough. Big Brother is here, it just took a bit after 1984 for it to happen.

What rights are being infringed? If you don't like a corporate policy, start your own company. Thanks to deregulation, that is your RIGHT.

If they are to eliminate all the "distractions", accidents would quadruple overnight. "Distractions" (within reason of course) make safe trucking and relatively sane & rested drivers possible. Why not a SINGLE arsehole who comes up with this rule take a 1 month long job with Swift or something. His/her already fragile mental constitution would shatter into small pieces after following all the crap FMCSA has to offer provided they will not wreck a truck before losing their minds.

A company asking or telling me not to use my phone is one thing. A company adopting eLogs is one thing. A company governing my truck is one thing. I can always leave that company, or as fortycalglock said, start my own company. When a company does it, while it may be annoying, i don't really see it as an infringement on my rights, because I also have the right to move on. Now when the govt mandates it, so I have no where to move on to, thats not infringement on my rights, it is freaking trampling all over them. The govt is way out of control. And many of these companies wouldnt even think of trying to do these things, if they didnt feel a precedent had been set by the govt. The socialism starts at the top and trickles down. It doesnt start in the middle or the bottom.

How about just working for a company that respects you have a life/family that doesn't involve them? Con-Way sent a message out requesting drivers who did have hands free let them know. If you didn't your fleet manager suggests you get one or instructs you not to use the phone. This is 1 area where the company shouldn't be finder just because an idiot driver is too cheap/stupid to buy a hands free device that does make you safer since you've got both hands on the wheel/1 hand on the wheel 1 on the shifter.
